Walter Sopher resides in Edmonton, Alberta, but stayed in Gimli in August and used the “capital of New Ice- land” as a home base to pro- mote the paper in the area. He visited quite many and hardly ever came back empty-hand- ed. “This is a time-consuming effort — but much needed,” he says. “The paper keeps us together and we need every- one aboard.” Icelanders of Victoria at Sooke, BC Donna Einarsson Sooke, BC On Wednesday 3 August, The Icelanders of Victoria joined Norway, Sweden, Den- mark and Finland in displaying artifacts and information about their countries at the Sooke Fine Arts Festival. The Sooke Fine Arts Festi- val is an annual juried art show held in Sooke, BC, about 30 minutes west of Victoria. The show, from July 30 to August 7, was marvelous, with art presented in many different forms. It is the largest juried art show on Vancouver Island and well attended by the pub- lic. This year different ethnic groups were asked to take part by telling about their country, and the Scandinavian day was August 3. Ruth Cartwright and Don- na and Ernie Einarsson set up the display in the limited space available and covered the whole day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. It was an enjoyable day and many people stopped to watch the VCR playing Icelandic tapes, provided by Norm Jonasson, on our small television set, and to look through our books. Sorne even took home copies of Lög- berg-Heimskringla that were on display. Many changes for L-H Grant Stefanson Chairperson, Lögberg-Heimskringla Board of Directors The Board of Directors of The Lögberg-Heim- skringla has been busy lately. In June, the board assisted Future Fund Chairman Dr. Ken Thorlakson with the official launch of the L-H Future Fund campaign. Between July 29 and August 1, the board was busy with promotional activities at íslendingadagurinn, which in- cluded being the media part- ner at the “Music on the Roof- top” event, putting a float in the parade, setting up displays at the Pavilion in Gimli Park and at the Waterfront Centre and participating in a number of festival events. The board is also promoting the soon-to- be released book of editorials of former L-H Editor Lillian Vilborg MacPherson. Special thanks to Committee Chair Joe Laxdal for his work to date on the book. In the midst of all of this activity, the board received the resignation of our Managing Editor, Steinþór Guðbjarts- son. Steinþór is retuming to Iceland to pursue a new oppor- tunity with the Icelandic daily newspaper Morgunblaðið. The board wishes Steinþór every success with his new job. We are confident that Steinþór will continue to excel as an award- winning joumalist in Iceland and we know that he will con- tinue to be part of the L-H team in some capacity. Steinþór joined the paper 18 months ago. He has made incredible contributions to the paper during this time. Steinþór gave the paper a fresh new look and an inclusive North Ameri- can perspective. He has cer- tainly contributed to the paper’s role as the hub of the Icleandic communities in North America and he has assisted in enhanc- ing ties beween Iceland and people of Icelandic descent in North America. The Board of Directors has appointed David Fuller as Edi- tor of the paper. David is cur- rently the Assistant Editor of the paper and has made signifi- cant contributions to the paper over the last decade. David has worked with three editors and has performed nearly every job during this time. David took over the duties as Editor on August 24. Someone will be hired to perform the copy and layout tasks shortly. The board extends a warm welcome to David. Congratulations to Steinþór and David!
