Recently, the “Beauty is
Timeless” 2006 calendar was
launched in Winnipeg — and
three hours later, 20 per cent
of the calendars were sold.
Nineteen senior women, one of
whom is of Icelandic descent,
posed nude to raise money for
the St. James Assiniboia Senior
Centre, and if all 2,000 calen-
dars are sold they will make
$40,000.
The movie Calendar Girls
inspired the fundraising women
of the St. James Assiniboia Se-
nior Centre, and in the end 19
women from about 60 years old
to 81 years old posed for the
calendar.
By doing so they wanted
“to demonstrate that older
adults, in this case older wom-
en, are healthy, active, vibrant
and dynamic with a sense of

adventure and a zest for life,” as
described in the calendar. “Our
‘Beauty is Timeless’ calendar
shows that it’s not always about
how you look, but rather how
you feel physically and emo-
tionally. The women in the cal-
endar illustrate, with a touch of
humour, that beauty is timeless
and that age is only a number.
A healthy mind, body and spirit
can only help to serve the com-
munity as a whole, and with the
aging population, the need for
such a message is growing.”
Paris Hilton is known
worldwide, and it looks like
Guðrún Viola Bjamason Hil-
ton is following in some of her
footsteps. Vi, who is 70 years
old and is of Icelandic descent,
is known for donating her time
to charity and wears many hats.
She volunteers at the Winnipeg
International Airport, at a ra-
dio station, and at various Ice-
landic-Canadian festivals like
the Scandinavian pavillion at
Winnipeg’s Folklorama and at
íslendingadagurinn in Gimli,
the Icelandic Festival of Mani-
toba. She is a member of the
Red Hat Society, and as Miss
June in the “Beauty is Time-
less” calendar she wears yet
another hat.
“This is all about how you
feel and not about nudity at all,”
Vi says. “However, when I’m
asked 20 years from now what
I did when I was 70, I can say
that I posed naked for a calen-
dar to raise money for charity.”
Proceeds from the sale of
the calendar will be directed
towards expanding and en-
hancing the centre’s programs
and services, which it offers its
members and the community at
large.
