Icelandic Festival scholarship

GIMLI, MB — The Wil-
helm Rristjanson Memorial
Scholarship of $500 is offered
by the Icelandic Festival of
Manitoba to a student who has
completed one or more years of
post-secondary studies and who
will be continuing his or her
studies the following year. The
selection is based on academic
results as well as on qualities
of leadership and community
service. The 2005 winner of
this scholarship is Kristjan Jon
Thompson of Winnipeg, Mani-
toba.
Kristjan’s leadership skills
and community involvement
are extensive. These quali-
ties include acting as a servant
leader volunteer at the Westem
Aviation Museum, tutoring ju-
nior-high students, and partici-
pating in various environmen-
tal aid projects in Manitoba.

Award,for outstanding contri-
bution to the community. He
loved the drama program at St.
Paul’s High School where he
held many leading roles in vari-
ous productions.
After serving as class
president for two years he was
elected to be president of .the
school student council in his
final year. Kristjan lead his
student council in organizing a
Walk-a-thon that raised $3000
for the Terry Fox Foundation.
He was also instrumental in or-
ganizing a concert which raised
over $ 1000 for the ALS Society
of Manitoba. As the Canadian
Blood Services youth ambas-
sador, Kristjan initiated school
participation in a large blood
drive over a two-year period.
Throughout his high school
years, Kristjan was an active
participant in the school’s re-
ligious retreat program for the
senior one and two students.
He led group discussions, and
helped facilitate and organize

religious retreat programs. In
his final year he was chosen to
be the rector of the Freshman
retreat overseeing the efforts of
60 individuals and making sure
the freshmen had a beneficial
and comforting experience as
they became new members of
the St. Paul’s community.
Kristjan volunteered at
Concordia Place which is a se-
nior care home, running vari-
ous recreation activities once
a week. Even when budget
cuts terminated the program
Kristjan saw how important the
program was to the residents
and volunteered to continue to
come in and independently run
the recreation program without
a paid supervisor. Recently he
transferred from the PCH and
now volunteers at Concordia
Hospital as an emergency room
aid every Sunday helping the
nurses and HCA’s. At the same
time he continues to visit resi-
dents at Concordia Place in his
spare time.

His efforts have been rec-
ognized in the communities
he has served. He has received
the Jesuit Secondary Educa-
tion Association Award, which
is the highest honour given by
St. Paul’s High School to only
one of their graduates, the Uni-
versity of Manitoba: Leader of
Tomorrow Award, the Fr. Ger-
ald Sheridan, sj award from St.
Paul’s College, the Jon Sigurd-
son Chapter IODE Scholarship
and the United Way Commu-
nity Service Excellence Award.
Kristjan plans to continue
his studies to acquire a science
degree and continue on into the
faculty of Medicine. He was
recently elected by his peers to
carry out the duties of the Uni-
versity of Manitoba Student’s
Union Representative for St.
Paul’s College for the academic
year 2005-2006. Kristjan has
accomplished all of this while
at the same time maintaining an
impressive GPA of over 4.
Kristjan’s reference stated
that his leadership abilities, in-
telligence, compassion towards
others, perseverance and dedi-
cation to any task he undertakes
will guide him through life. He
is a natural leader, the reference
goes on to say, who is commil-
ted to justice and fairness.
Kristjan is deeply proud of
his Icelandic heritage. Both sets
of great-grandparents originat-
ed in Iceland and immigrated
to Canada in the early 1900s.
Peter and Runa Thompson
settled in Gimli and Sigurdur
and Ann Sigurdson settled in
Arnes. Kristjan is the son of
Brian Thompson and Laurie
Miller. His amma is Lorraine
Thompson and his afi is the late
Tommy Thompson. Kristjan
explains that it was his amma
Lorraine Thompson who edu-
cated him about his Icelandic
background and encouraged
him in all his endeavours.

Icelandic Festival Committee
of Manitoba congratulate Krist-
jan and wish him much success
in all his future educational en-
deavours.
