Haunted ships sail out of history
On the shores of the Red
River, some famous
ships still sail — though
nowadays the waves aren’t of
water, but of grass.
The ships at Selkirk’s Ma-
rine Museum include the S.S.
Keenora, the C.G.S. Bradbury,
the M.S. Peguis II, the Chicka-
ma II, the M.S. Northland Lady
Canadian, the Joe Simpson, the
Jackie S. and the remains of the
Granite Rock. Also on display
is the Black Bear Island Light-
house. The ships are sunk part-
way into the ground and rest on
concrete foundations.
Shaylene Nordal is the man-
ager of the museum and has been
involved for a decade. “I started
back in ’95 as a tour guide,
working through university, just
a summer job,” she says. “And
then a couple of years into it,
my boss here at the time, George
Dorman, got sick, and he recom-
mended me to take over as mu-
seum manager, seeing as how I
knew so much about the muse-
um and running it already.” She
