Arsyfirlit VEÐRÁTTAN 1979 Viðauki. JarÖ8kjálftar í desember 1978. 1 kjölfar landsigs, sem hófst á Kröflusvæði að kvöldi 6. janúar og að marki að morgni 7. janúar hófst mikil jarðskjálftahrina í Kelduhverfi að morgni 8. janúar. Fann fólk á sumum bæjum í Kelduhverfi hundruð jarðhræringa fram til 13. janúar og litilsháttar hræringar öðru hverju út mánuðinn. Upptök jarð- skjálftanna voru skammt sunnan byggðar á móts við Undirvegg að morgni 8. janúar, en færðust síðan í norður næstu daga, allt norður á Flatir. Að Garði í Kelduhverfi, 8—10 km frá upptökum voru mestu skjálftamir IV—V stig á Mercalli kvarða. Mestu skjálftanna varð vart vestur að Reyðará og austur í Vopnafjörð. Stærstu skjálftar urðu sem hér segir: Hinn 9. kl. 0435 (stærð 4.2), kl. 0916 (4,3), kl. 1354 (4.4), kl. 1503 (4,3), kl. 1903 (4.5), kl. 2003 (4.3), hinn 10. kl. 0157 (4.4), kl. 1039 (4.2), kl. 1245 (4.5), kl. 1742 (4.6), kl. 1926 (4.3), kl. 2045 (4.4), hinn 11. kl. 1058 (4.6) og kl. 1641 (4.3). Samfara þessum skjálftum varð mikið sig og gliðnun sunnan- og austanvert í Keldu- hverfinu, sums staðar 1—2 metrar. 1 tlSarfarsyfirliti fyrir 1978 féll niður kaflinn um árshita. Kaflinn er þannig: Hiti var 0.3° undir meðallagi. Um meginhluta Austurlands var rösklega 0.5° kaldara en í meðalári og sama gilti um nokkrar stöðvar á Faxaflóasvæði og Hornbjargsvita. Annars staðar var hiti yfirleitt frá 0.3° yfir meðallagi að 0.5° undir þvi. Arssveifla hitans var mest 16° — 18° í innsveitum norðaustanlands, fram að sjó við Skjálfanda og á Hvera- völlum. Minnst var árssveiflan 10° í Vestmannaeyjum og á Kambanesi og 11° á fjórum strandarstöðvum. Víðast var árssveiflan 12°—15°. Summary of the annual report of the Icelandic Meteorological Office 1979 Fiftyseven personnel positions were occupied during 1979 in the following divisions of the Icelandic Meteorological Office: administration, forecasting division, telecommuni- cations, climatological division, instrumental division, geophysical division and aviation observation division. Aviation forecasting was incorp>orated in the forecasting division in July. The number of stations was as follows: 40 synoptic stations, 39 climatological stations, 7 agrometeorological stations and 38 precipitation stations. Weather messages were sent from 61 Icelandic ships. Upper air observations were made at Keflavik airport at 12 and 24 GMT. The total number of radiosonde observations (RAOB) was 720 and wind observations (RAWIN) were 718. Nine seismological stations were operated and from the autumn also 8 borehole strainmeters. Weather reports and forecasts for Iceland and the surrounding sea banks were broadcast 9 time each day. Special voice broadcasts on short wave from coastal stations intended for shipping were initiated in December. Broadcasts in Morse code of forecasts for the deep sea banks in Icelandic and English 4 times in 24 hours were continuet. Forecasts with a 48 hour validity period were issued once a day. Weather charts were presented by a meteorologist in the Icelandic Television every operational day. The monthly issues of Veðráttan were published for the months June 1978 — June 1979. Preliminary Seismogram Readings were issued weekly and sent to subscribers. Seismological bulletin for 1965 and 1966 was issued and Sea Ice off the Icelandic coasts October 1970 — September 1971.
