4 WHITE FALCON Saturday, September 23, 1961 AFRS Beginning 24-Hr. Schedule A plan long contemplated and desired — around-the- clock radio broadcast — will be realized Monday by AFRS, Keflavik Airport, it was announced this week. “We have known for a long^y time,” said Journalist First Class Jim Pynn, “that listeners wanted 24-hour a day programming but we have been stymied by lack of trained personnel.” Pynn, Station Manager of the Keflavik affiliate of Armed Forc- es Radio and Television Service, pointed out that the newly-an- nounced operation was “slightly shaky” at present. Sickness or emergencies, he said, could “shoot down the program before it gets well off the ground.” The situation at the radio sta- tion is such, he said, that 24-hour operation is possible only if all staff members dodge winter’s wicked wave of colds, laryngitis and flu bugs. “But, we think it’s worth tak- ing the chance in order to bring listeners in Iceland radio at any time, day or night. The staff has unstintingly given of time and talent, working double shifts in many instance, in order to make the change,” Pynn said. Staff Sergeant Tom Foulks, in announcing the new schedule, ad- ded his vote of thanks to the staff for their hard work in making the 24-hour broadcast day pos- sible. Foulks is well known in all facts of radio and is the long- time Program Director of the loc- al AFRS station. Foulks revealed that he would be “The Night Owl” and take the midnight to six shift. The new programming will feature music exclusively, with the red-head dee- jaying. Jim Ameche and Ira Cook will be guest stars each night, kicking things off between 1 and 2:30 a.m. At 2:30, “The Night Owl” takes over. The announcing staff consists of Seamen Dean Adkins, Jim Tic- ehurst and Mike Quinn. Yeoman Second Class Ron Carignan, a new addition, joined the AFRS radio crew this week. The four, along with Pynn and Foulks, will carry the brunt of announcing chores. ExchangeOpen House September 26, at 10:15 a.m., the Exchange officially becomes a Navy activity.
