GEMINI PILOTS—The pilots selected for the first manned flight of
NASA Project Gemini, scheduled for March 23, undergo a flight test
in a mock-up spacecraft. In the pilot and spacecraft commander seat
(right), is Major Virgil I. Grissom, USAF, and in the co-pilot seat
is Lieutenant Commander John W. Young, USN. The Gemini shot
originally scheduled for firing March 22, was postponed one day.
Grissom-Young Duo
Make Three Orbits
The United States attempted its first two-man space
capsule launch March 23.
Under the command of Major Virgil I. Grissom, USAF,
and co-piloted by Lieutenant Commander John W. Young,
■^USN, the Gemini spacecraft made
three orbits of the earth.
Originally scheduled for March
22, the Project Gemini shot was
postponed one day to give offi-
cials of the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration time to
launch a Ranger photographic
spacecraft for a Lunar reconnais-
sance mission.
A day was needed between fir-
ings at Cape Kennedy to reset
computers upon which both sys-
tem’s guidance units are governed.
The Ranger flight must be
made when the Earth and Moon
are in desirable position for the
photographic mission to be suc-
cessfully accomplished.
Last Jan. 19, the United
States successfully launched an
unmanned Gemini spacecraft that
soared 2,127 miles in suborbital
flight from Florida. An 11-story
tall Titan II booster hurled the
Gemini spacecraft in a trajectory
105 miles high that lasted only
19 minutes.
Project Gemini has been evolved
to test the stamina of astronauts
an to find out everything possible
about their equipment. The project
is part of the effort to land men
on the moon by 1970. — (AFPS)

SIX MORE YEARS—Of checking
out microwave gear apparently
sounded good to William J. Patton,
RM3, of NavCommSta. He has just
reenlisted for six more years under
the Star program. His guaranteed
“B” school, after he derosses in
May, sounds mighty good to him.
