Archbishop Visits Here
The station Catholic Chaplain®
was accorded a rare privilege,
Aug. 19, as he was visited by His
Excellency, the Most Reverend
Archbishop Bruno Heim, Aposto-
lic Delegate to the Scandinavian
countries, and Papal Pro Nuncio
to Finland. These titles give the
Archbishop the rank of Ambassa-
dor in diplomatic circles.
Father John Wishard received the
Archbishop according to ecclesi-
astical custom at the chapel and
escorted him through the chapel
compound. From there, the Arch-
bishop was taken to the Quarters
of RAdm Weymouth and was
received by the admiral, Col.
Daniel MacLean, Capt James
Ball and Capt E. E. Pierre Jr.
After a three hour visit, the Arch-
bishop departed to prepare for
the next leg of his journey
throughout his vast area of super-
vision.
Archbishop Heim has a dual
mission. As Apostolic Delegate, he
is over-seer of all the Catholics
in the Scandinavian countries. The
Bishops of those countries look
to the Archbishop as the official
intermediary between themselves
and the Roman Pontiff. As Pro-
Nuncio, the Archbishop repre-
sents, in consular and diplomatic
circles, the Pope as the temporal
ruler of the Vatican State.
Archbishop Heim’s visit was a
great honor since in his many
visits to Iceland, this was his
first visit, formal or informal, to
the American Catholic community
at the International Airport. (See
photo page 4)
-®at 1 p.m. with a special invitation
to Icelanders to attend.
Weather will play an important
part in the Open House, for the
highlights of the afternoon will
take place at 3 p.m. when a giant
air show begins. This hour long
attraction includes participation
by major commands of the IDF,
featuring a close-wing “Fly-
over” by Pilots of Air For-
ces Iceland in their F-102 jet
aircraft, along with some steep
climbs after a maximum perfor-
mance take-off. VP-26 fliers will
put their new aircraft through
some exciting paces.
Other events will include a
breathtaking series of parachute
jumps by members of the skydiving
club. Members of the Defense
Force Search and Rescue Team
will show how stranded people
may be rescued via helicopters.
The station crash crew will put
out a pre-set fire in a junked F-89
jet, demonstrating how well a
disaster could be controlled should
one ever occur.
The Air Show will take place
near the large hanger on the
Agreed Area, but inside that
hangar, visitors will be able to
view displays of facilities and
equipment from areas all over the
base. Included will be a display
of some of COMSTA’s powerful
communication equipment by
which the Defense Force keeps in
touch with the whole world, en-
gines used in modern aircraft
plus many other interesting visual
attractions.
For the visitors interested in
touring other areas of the base,
some activities will make their
facilities available for viewing.
In this group will be the new A.
T. Mahan grade school, and
dining hall where refreshments
will be served; and the Fleet
Weather Facility/Iceland Weather
Bureau, where fascinating weather
forecasting apparatus will be on
display in use by the Icelanders
and Americans working there.
These buildings and a few others
will be opened from 1 p.m. until
the air show begins at 3 p.m.
Everyone is urged to attend
this function, and there is no
charge for admission. A descrip-
tive brochure will be made avail-
able at the gate, which describes
the areas of interest open to
viewers, plus how and where to
find them. This is a good op-
portunity to see what is going on
in Iceland for the defense of the
Free World.
office Sunday Aug. 21. Mrs. Weymouth witnessed the
presentation, including the reading of the letter, which
read in part: “For outstanding performance while en-
gaged as Commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Barrier
Group, Iceland engaged in special project in summer 1965
.... through outstanding leadership perserverance and
sound judgement contributed directly to the success
of the mission ....” (NAVY PHOTO)
