NAS Marine Corps Security Force Company
(MCSFCo) honored one of it’s own recently.
Staff Sgt. Carlton Hensley, MCSFCo supply
chief, was selected as NAS Senior Military
Member of the Quarter.
“My 1st Sgt. submitted me for the recommen-
dation. I’m really honored to be selected,”
Hensley said.
Hensley felt one of the factors which put him
above the competition was his continuous pur-
suit of education. “That was one of the ques-
tions I was asked - why I felt I should be select-
ed. My appearance was really good, and I my
answers were good, but I think the fact that I’ve
continued my education made a big impact.”
Hailing from Lakewood, Colo., he enlisted in
the Marines in 1989. The challenging reputation
of the Marines was what lured him into the
Corps. “I wanted to take advantage of the
opportunity to be one of the best,” he said. “To
me, the Marines just looked really sharp, and I
wanted to be a part of that.”
Another benefit of joining the Corps, Hensley
said, was the opportunity to continue his studies.
“There’s no excuse why a person can’t further
their education in the military, especially in a
place like Keflavfk. There are lots of avenues
here. The ratio of instructors compared to the
population is really good.”
Hensley’s future plans include completing his
bachelors degree in business management with
an emphasis in accounting, and “to be selected
for the Staff NCO Degree Completion Program.
That’s what I’m shooting for.”
Reservist re-ups for six years

Staff Sgt. Kimberley Summerell, an Air Force reservist
assigned to IDF, recently reenlisted for six years.
Air Force Reserve Staff Sgt.
Kimberley Summerell signed on
for an additional six years at a
ceremony at Iceland Defense
Force (IDF) Headquarters last
week.
Attached to the 716th
Communications Flight,
Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C.,
she’s served as assistant in the
Plans and Projects Department
of IDF since January.
Originally from Windsor,
Ontario, Summerell said serving
in the Reserves gave her the opportunity to once
again enjoy the military on a part-time basis. “I
was on active duty for 10 years and I got out. I
was living on an Air Force base with my hus-
band, and really missed being in uniform.”
While serving in Keflavfk, she was nominated
for Military Member of the Quarter. “That was
an honor. I’m here doing what I consider to be a
lot of fun. I’m having a great time, and to be
honored in the fact that I’m doing a good job at
having fun makes it special.”
Although her current career plans in the
Reserves include advancing to Technical
Sergeant, Summerell said the most rewarding
aspect of the military has been the people. “The
camaraderie offered in the military is great. The
feeling that you can make a difference with your
job and the people you meet really makes it
worth the effort.”
