Savings Bond campaign set to begin in May By Lt. Shane McIntosh Financial security is a goal for which we all strive. Whether sav- ing for retirement, a home, or a child’s education, U.S. Savings Bonds are a great way to achieve your desires. Buying U.S. Savings Bonds is an affordable and easy way to start saving, and can remain an important part of your financial planning throughout your career. Savings bonds are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States and can be replaced free if lost, stolen, or destroyed. Savings bonds earn short-term rates for the first five years they are held. This rate is adjusted semi-annually, May 1 and Nov. 1, and is currently 4.6 percent. Bonds are guaranteed to reach original maturity, or face value, at 17 years. However, this is a minimum; bonds with an average inter- est rate of 4.9 percent would reach maturity at 14.7 years. Bonds can be held for, and collect interest at, the long-term rate until 30 years from the date of issue, called the final maturity. Interest earned is exempt from all state and local income taxes. Federal income tax reporting can be deferred until redemption or final maturity (30 years), whichever comes first. Bonds can also be completely tax free if used to pay for college tuition and fees. Purchasing U.S. Savings Bonds boosts our personal savings rate, which is needed to fuel future economic growth and it helps reduce the cost of financing our public debt. For every $ 1 billion invested in Savings Bonds, the government saves $70 million in debt financ- ing. Savings bonds come in payroll plans that fit every budget. The plans start at just $5 a month ($2.50 a paycheck). The purchase price of a bond is half its face value, and denomi- nations run from $100 to $1,000. Bonds begin to draw interest on the first day of the month that the last payment is made. May 1 - 31 is the annual NAS Keflavik U.S. Savings Bond Campaign. If you have any questions, contact your command representative or finance office for more information and assistance in starting your payroll allotment. Look for Savings Bond representatives in Lava Java at the Viking Mall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2 p.m., starting May 1. sSSuc SAVINGS Take inAmeric^T!5( 0.
