NCTSI offers new payment plan
Customers can now pay phone bills with a credit card
Story and photo by J03 Mike C. Jones
If last week’s weather was any indication
of the weather we might expect in the
upcoming months, trudging through the
snow to get to the phone office to pay the
phone bill each month, will be an unavoid-
able experience for base residents, right?
No, not exactly.
Nov. 11 marked the start of a new phone
bill payment option at the Naval Computer
and Telecommunications Station Iceland
(NTCSI) Telephone Office. Widely used
throughout Europe, the new payment option
allows customers with Eurocard or
Mastercard to have phone bills automatical-
ly charged to their credit card accounts.
NCTSI Base Communications Leading
Chief Petty Officer ICC Jonathan Hedricks
said that once customers fill out their appli-
cation for a payment option, they’ll no
longer need to take the monthly trek to the
phone office.
“Customers will go to the office and sign
and receive a copy of the payment option
agreement,” he said. “After that, charges
will be made automatically to their credit
card accounts on the 15th of each month.”
Customers wishing to establish the pay-
ment option with NCTSI need to already
have EuroCard or Mastercard accounts,
Hendricks pointed out. “The process is for
EuroCard and Mastercard customers only at
this time” he said. “We’re hoping to be able
to accept Visa cards in the near future.”
Although the new payment option may
make phone bills a little easier to manage,
Hendricks emphasized that once a customer
signs up for the charge account, the process
is automatic.
“The monthly telephone bill is charged to
the customers credit card account every

month, without any further action required
by the customer,” said Hendricks. “The cus-
tomer will receive a telephone bill in the nor-
mal manner, and because phone bills vary
from month to month, it is wise financial
planning for the customer to check their bill
and monitor the charges that are being made
to their credit card account. Customers can
always call ext. 4500 at any time to check the
status of their account. The option may also
be used to pay the final telephone bill,” he
added.
Hendricks said the new charge plan was
established to comply with customers survey
requests.
“A lot of customers were asking about the
possibility of paying phone bills by credit
card. This is the first step. In the near future
we hope to add credit and debit card “Swipe
Card service.” Our aim is to provide the best,
most efficient service possible, with the tools
we have,” he said.

Combined Federal
Campaign to wrap
up next week
By J02 Christopher E. Tucker
The 1999 base-wide Combined
Federal Campaign (CFC) moves into its
last week on Nov. 15 and CFC coordi-
nators are looking for a strong finish in
hopes of surpassing last year’s total by 5
percent.
So far the community has raised more
than $80,000, and is already showing a
2-percent increase over last year.
“The campaign started out slow, but
then picked up pace,” said UTC(SCW)
Dean Ledee, CFC coordinator for NAS
Keflavfk and tenant commands. “We
still have to factor in a few commands,
but I believe we’re going to meet our
goal of a 5-percent increase.”
With only one week left, CFC coordi-
nators are hoping to reach the people
who haven’t donated yet.
“I think people should think strongly
about contributing, especially if they’re
in the military,” Ledee said. “At one
time or another, one of the 1.700 organi-
zations represented by the CFC will
affect their lives.”
Nov. 19 is the last day to make a con-
tribution. Ledee said anyone who needs
a contribution form should call him at
ext. 7890 or see their command CFC
representative.
“Whether it’s the Red Cross helping
out families with newborn children or
the American Cancer Society, the CFC
is everyone’s chance to make a differ-
ence,” Ledee added.
