This is a section af the 1,600 mile Alaskan Highway ready
for the scheduled opening of the entire route Dec. 1, 1942.
Providing the first road connections between the United States
and Alaska, this lifeline of the United Nations runs through
swamps, mountains and dense wilderness. Numerous obstacles
were overcome by U.S. Army Engineers in finishing the pro-
ject months ahead of schedule. The weather varied from 35
degrees below zero in March to 90 above in July. Men work-
ing in swamps wore gloves and net helmets to protect them-
selves against mosquitoes, flies and other insects.
Max Stephan, seen between two U.S. officers following his

of assisting a Nazi war prisoner who had escaped from
a Canadian prisoner camp. The prisoner, Lt. Hans Peter
