The Gridiron
Horoscope
By Gene Graff
Major upsets have so thoroughly muddled the
current football campaign, it’s now safe for this
erstwhile crystal-gazer to take a shot at to-
day’s collegiate card. So let’s spin the grid wheel
o’ fortune, Henry, and see what happens.
ALABAMA-KENTUCKY — The Crimson Tide
is Rose Bowl bound, and this doesn’t look like
a detour. Kentucky dropped last year’s game,
30-0. The Colonels haven’t improved, but ’Bama
has. The Crimson Tide in a breeze, 35 to 0.
ILLINOIS-NOTRE DAME — The Illini are en-
joying their most successful season in years,
while the Irish registered the nation’s No. 1
upset Saturday, smashing previously unbeaten
Iowa Pre-Flight Cadets, 28 to 0. It’s a photo-
finish with Illinois continuing to surprise, 7 to 6.
UCLA-SANTA CLARA — The two hottest
teams on the West Coast risk their Rose Bowl
dreams today, and the Broncos are favored by
a hair. There’s plenty of room for an upset
here, but it looks like Santa Clara, 7 to 0.
NORTHWESTERN-OHIO STATE — The
"Wildcats are one of the nation’s disappointments
this season, while Ohio State is expected to be
an important factor in the Big 10 scramble. So
Otto Graham notwithstanding, the Buckeyes
shouldn’t falter here. The wheel says Ohio State
19, Northwestern 7.
MINNESOTA-MICHIGAN — Fritz Crisler has
a talented array of backfielders operating from
behind a massive line. Minnesota’s Golden Goph-
ers have lost some of their luster, but they’re
still a fair country eleven, and this li’l Brown
Jug meeting is always a bitter one. Flip a coin
and Michigan draws the nod, 12 to 7.
SOUTHERN CAL.-STANFORD — Neither is
a serious contender for conference honors, but
there’s always plenty of action when they
square off. Stanford finally broke into the win-
ning column Saturday, and the Indians appa-
rently have enough tricks to polish off the Tro-
jans, 19 to 14.
MICHIGAN STATE-GREAT LAKES — The
Sailors are studded with stars, and can’t be
beat when they’re “on.” Michigan State doesn’t
have much so Great Lakes is a heavy choice,
33 to 6.
TEXAS AGGIES-BAYLOR — The Aggies are
having one of those seasons where nothing clicks
when it should. Baylor also is hot and cold this
year. So let’s take a tip from last season’s game
when the Aggies routed Baylor, 48 to 0. Today’s
score? Aggies on top, 20 to 7.
IOWA CADETS-ST. MARY’S CADETS — Ber-
nie Bierman hasn’t lost two games in succession
since Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over that fa-
mous lantern, and his tutelages are too for-
midable to let the boss down today. It’s too
bad St. Mary’s follows Notre Dame on the Sea-
hawk’s schedule ’cause they’ll get no mercy
today. The Seahawks should romp through this
one, 33 to 0.
WISCONSIN-PURDUE — Harry Stuldreher’s
Badgers are knocking at the Big 10 title door
after years of dwelling in the lowly second
division, and Purdue is just another victim,
26 to 13.
Bierman’s Streak
Ends At 21 Straight
If Dame Fortune doesn’t discard her upset-campaign soon, there won’t be any undefeated collegiate
football squads worthy of laying claim to the mythical National championship this season. As it is, only
a dozen major teams have eluded defeat or a tie thus far.
The most stunning rever-
sal was registered Saturday
by once-beaten and once-
tied Notre Dame which salvaged
the remnants of a proud season
by spanking Bernie Bierman’s
well nigh invincible Iowa Sea-
hawks, 28 to 0. It was the first
setback for a Bierman eleven in
22 successive starts, and was all
the more remarkable because it
followed the Seahawks’ succes-
ses against Northwestern, Min-
nesota and Michigan.
Today the Seahawks strive to
regain their winning ways when
they play host to St. Mary’s Ca-
dets. Notre Dame, meanwhile,
tackles another unbeaten team,
Illinois, and might very likely
remove the Illini from their elite
perch if Angelo Bertelli’s passes
are clicking as they were last
week.
A battered old brown jug, em-
blematic of the intense rivalry,
will be tossed up for grabs to-
day when Minnesota’s Golden
Gophers entertain Michigan. The
Wolves have been unable to
wrest the traditional trophy
from Minnesota for the past six
years, but are conceded a slight
edge this time.
Michigan’s lone defeat was in-
flicted by the Seahawks, while
Minnesota, already upset by the
surprising Illinois eleven, must
win today to remain in the
Big 10 conference whirl. The
Gophers downed Nebraska, 13 to
2, last week, but failed to un-
cork anything resembling Michi-
gan’s power as the Wolverines

SHORT SHOTS
The gilt-edged Chicago Bears, hotter than a
firecracker on the Fourth of July, shoot for
their fifth success of the season—and their
18th in a row—tomorrow afternoon when Sid
Luckman & Co. entertain the Philadelphia Eag-
les. The Bears stand alone in the unbeaten
ranks and appear headed for their third conse-
cutive National Football league crown. Re-
mainder of tomorrow’s full complement of
games is as follows: Chicago Cardinals at Cleve-
land, Green Bay at Detroit, New York at Brook-
lyn and Washington at Pittsburgh.
The Bears battered a strong New York Gi-
ants eleven, 26 to 7, last Sunday to the delight
of 36,000 Windy City fans. After Gary Fami-
glietti scampered 35 yards to register the Bears’
first touchdown the Giants didn’t have a chance
against the mighty Halas machine.
Cecil Isbell and Don Hutson enjoyed one of
their best days to lead Green Bay to a 45 to 28
triumph over the Cleveland Rams.
Washington maintained its advantage in the
Eastern division by trouncing Brooklyn, 21 to
10, as Sammy Baugh pitched three touchdown
passes. In other games, the Chicago Cardinals
slipped past Detroit, 7 to 0, and Pittsburgh sub-
dued Philadelphia, 14 to 0.
HERE ‘N’ THERE: Don Hutson, Green Bay’s
great end, is far ahead of last year’s pace when
he led the National Football Legue scoring with
95,points in 11 games. .. The rangy pass catcher
has scored seven touchdowns and 14 extra
points for 56 points in four games... .Fights
