Have you taken any USAFI
courses since being in the
Army?
“Yes,” answered Pfc. Alex
Stels of Scran-
ton, Pa., “I
have taken the
Auto Mechan-
ics' course and
have found it
to he excel-
lent., I think it
is a fine idea, especially for
(hose who have not finish-
ed their schooling. For the
rest of .us, like myself, it is
possible to learn a whole
new trade in this manner.”
Pvt. Louis Poulos replied,
“No, I have
not and Idon’t
intend to.

Barring divorce or a
stretch in the clink, newly- \
weds of the future can look j
forward to a span of marri-
ed life five years longer than
newlyweds of 20 years ago. j
isticians, who add that a
bride and groom whose ages
are 25 may expect to life
together 37 years, whereas
it would have been only 32
years hack in 1925. The reas-
on, so the experts say, is
simply Hi a t life expectancy
has risen in recent years.
In most marriages the
prospect is that the woman
will outlive her husband.
According to current m or ta-
li tv conditions, the wife will
live longest in three out of
five cases if husband and
wife are of the same age;
in two out of three cases if
she is five years younger;
and in three out of four cas-
es if she is ten years younger.
js no incen-
tive. You see,
I plan to go
hack to my
own established business
which. 1 ran sucessfully be-
fore the war and which I’m
sure I’ll he able to run suc-
cessfully again without the
benefit of any additional
education. But for the others,
I think it is a good tiling.”
Before the war Louis was
a restaurant owner in Mid-
land, Mich.
“I think it is strictly a pro-
,...; position for
the younger
men whose
schooling was
interrupted by
the war, for I
notice that full
credits are giv-
en for such work,” said for-
mer merchandiser Sgt. Ge-
orge A- Moore of St. Louis,
Mo. “In my case, I have my
education in my chosen field
and as I am quite sure of
stepping hack into my for-
mer position, such USAFI
courses would not he of
much use to me. I think the
same thing applies to the
educational grants under the
GI Bill of Brights — they
are both great opportunities
for the younger men — hut
for the older ones who have
already started to ‘make
their mark in the world’ they
are not especially benefici-
al.”
Sgt. Cameron Murchison

ONE WAY TO DO IT
Shoplifters, 85 percent of
whom are women, sneak off
with $80,000,000 worth of
goods a year, a professional
department store detective
reveals. The “spotter” says
that many of the petty thi-
eves are war workers build-
ing “nest eggs” for the post-
war era.
Perhaps it is
because I just
came out of
school into the
Armjx I think it is a fine
chance for those who do
need some ‘catching up’ or
for anyone interested in
learning a new trade. The
thing I’m more interested in
now, for the future, is how
to go about getting a post-
war job — is there a course
on that?” Cameron is from
Washington, D.C., and grad-
uated from the University of
North Carolina shortly be-
fore induction.
