Nazis Claim Leningrad Encircled
Soviet Armies Intact
all Along the Line
..---------
Defence Preparations Continue
--------»--------
London, Sept. 8th.
Latest German claims in the battle for Leningrad are
their mobile units have reached the river Neva east of
Leningrad on a broad front. They also claim to have taken
town of Schlusselburg on Lake Ladoga, thereby com-
Pleting the encirclement of the town. In contrast to these
feports which have not been confirmed, Moscow maintains
that Marshal Voroshilov is receiving a steady stream of
Supplies by land and sea. Elsewhere no major develop-
^ents are reported.
The Germans are still some
distance from the Tmain forti-
hcations of Leningrad and ad-
fdt that the Russian resistance
ls extremely tough. From west
^he Germans have to advance
through a small belt of forest
close to the coast but further
lnland there is a treeless,
^leak plateau and then bogs
lllterspersed with woods. In the
s°utheast they have to advance
through vast marshes and for-
ests where it is very difficult
to use t^nks. Latest Russian
reports bely the Gennan claim
°f having encircled the city.
■^here are still plenty of roads
°Pen eastwards.
The Finns claim to have
reached the river Svir between
Lake Onega and Lake Ladoka.
H this report is true they have
cut off the important White
Canal but they are still
•^60 miles from the city itself.
The German air force is try-
hard to dislocate Lenin-
§rad’s communications with
outer world and are also
frying' to frighten people in the
Leningrad area by ruthless
kombing of harmless villages
t^here they swoop down and
^Uachine-gun children in the
streets.
A broadcast from Moscow
morning describes how the
people of Leningrad are “tak-
ing it.” They say the Nazi at-
tackers are breaking their
heads against the steel wall of
defences and that they will go
on breaking them. On Sunday
more than half a million work-
ers worked voluntarily all day.
The main strength of the
Russian forces is barring the
Nazis the way to Moscow. The
Germans talk of fierce Russian
counter-attacks in this- area. A
German war correspondent
said in a broadcast speech last
night, that the Russian artill-
ery was magnificent. The Ger-
mans had no rest or sleep for
three nights. He described the
attacks of the Russian infantry
as terribly fierce, but of course
everything went right for the
Germans in the end.

Repo;rts from Bucharest say the
town iwas bombed three times
last night. The 'Roumanians say
a textile factory wias hit.

British Bombers Blast Berlin
Heaviest Raid In this War.
-----♦.......—
Big Fires in Centre of German eapital.
.....-♦-------
London, Sept. 8th.
Last night Berlin had the heaviest raid in this war. Hundr-
eds of RAF bombers were in action and tons of heavy bombs
and incendiaries were dropped on the German capital. The Air
Ministry communiqué issued this afternoon states that last night
British bombers attacked Berlin, Kiel and several other objec-
tives in Germany. Docks at Boulogne were also attacked. Four
enemy night bombers were shot down. Twenty British bombers
are missmg.
There was clear moonlight
and it was easy for the bombers
to find their targets in Berlin.
Several big fires were started
in the centre of the city and
many high explosive bombs
dropped near the railway sta-
tions. The attack lasted two
hours.
The Berlin newspapers are
furious and describe this attack
which was launched on the
anniversary of the worst blitz
on London, as a criminal at-
tack by the British. They all
threaten dire reprisals.
In addition to these attacks
British fightyhrs attacked en-
emy aerodromes from the
Dutch coast to Bretagne. They
were assisted by American
built Havoc planes. This morn-
ing big fires could be seen
