that Mitchells’ and medium
sized bombers without escort.
made the attack yesterday after
noon.
The raid was pressed home in
spite of bad weather and heavy
. anti aircraft fire, with the re-

against enemy roads, railways,
troop positions and airfields, —
particularly in the Rome area,
have been made during the
last twenty-four hours.
The biggest raid yesterday
was carried out by the same
Liberator force, which some
time ago went for the Ploesti
airfields in Rumania. The Li-
berators’ target now was the
railway which hugs Italy’s Ad-
riatic coast. The raid lasted
half an hour, and the road was
left blocked in at least four
places.
Other targets yesterday in-
cluded the enemy airfields on
Crete and Cos, as well as an
enemy convoy off Crete. Two
enemy seaplanes were destroy-
ed. Only one Allied machine is
missing.
WASHINGTON: — Doctor
Meredith Burrill, director of the
United States board on geo-
graphical names, in a report to
the Secretary of Interior Har-
old Ickes, told how the Ger-
mans had fortified the wrong
town in Norway.
The report said that there
are three towns in west centr-
al Norway all named Leikang-
er. One is a small village in the
political division of More, and
the other two are in Sogn and
Fordane.
The German high command
ordered the fortification of
Leikanger in Sogn and Ford-
ane. The German commander
in that district knew only one
Leikanger — the wrong one.
He worked two years in bu-
ilding fortifications before the
new Nazi supervisor discover-
ed the error.

Germans. One they sank, and
the other they captured and
took to port.
