as an undefeated heavy-weight champion.
Popular toys included Mr. Potato Head,
Frisbee and Barbie while some of the most
watched shows were ‘Leave it to Beaver,’
‘Captain Kangaroo’ and ‘I Love Lucy.’”
He added that President Dwight
Eisenhower and Vice President Richard
Nixon were in office while gasoline was less
than 10 cents a gallon and a loaf of bread cost
14 cents.
After a brief historical look at the 50s, a
best-dressed costume contest from the
decade and music that prompted dances like
the Tango and Cha-Cha, the master of cere-
monies continued with the 60s.
“The Beatles became popular and the
Hippie generation came alive. In 1962,
Marilyn Monroe was found dead and John F.
Kennedy was assassinated in 1963,” said
Klinefelter. “In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King
was assassinated. ‘Bonanza’, ‘Mission
Impossible’ and the ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ were
popular. Woodstock became one of the
biggest events for that era in 1969,”
He added that pants for women were
unheard of while men were clean-shaven and
wore suits and ties.
Wrapping up the 60s, the crowd participat-
ed in the popular Limbo dance where all ages
took turns displaying their flexibility.
Continuing down memory lane,
Klinefelter highlighted the disco era of the
70s.
“The Vietnam Conflict continued until
1975 while the Watergate scandal surfaced
and is remembered from the 70s of a decade
of hopes and dreams. Famous inventions
included floppy disks and dot matrix fol-
lowed by laser printers,” said Klinefelter.
“Popular movies included ‘Jaws,’ ‘the
Godfather,’ ‘Stars Wars’ and ‘Saturday Night
Fever.’ President Nixon resigned and Gerald
Ford became the first non-elected United
States President to hold that position.”
Guests met new people, danced to music
from the 70s and left with impressions from
memory lane.
Instead of their monthly potluck, the Fil-
AM Association decided to host a theme
dance and invited people from the Keflavik
community on and off base.
“We wanted to give the community an
opportunity to get together for a night of nos-
talgic fun,” said Klinefelter. “All they had to
do was look into the back of their closets for
clothes that fit
with the 50s, 60s
or 70s styles. I
found a white suit
and black shirt that
fit into the disco
era. People who
didn’t wear cos-
tumes still enjoyed
the show and see-
ing others dressed
in their favorite
decade.” He added
that it took 15 sec-
onds to grow his
set of made-ready
sideburns.
Klinefelter said
that teenager’s
behavior and atti-
tude from the 60s,
for example, are
not much different from today’s teenagers.
“The variation lies in the music and fash-
ion,” said Klinefelter. “In those days, teen-
agers hung out at the drive-in theaters and
soda shops. Today, they hang out at the video
arcades and malls.” He added that young
people could learn about the culture of the
50s, 60s and 70s and bring some of that into
their generation by reading and asking their
parents and teachers about those decades.
