Story and photo by JOl Linda Pepka The Keflavik community woke to some long-forgotten tunes as calls came pouring in to the Naval Media Center Broadcast Detachment Monday morning. This year’s weeklong Mediathon, which benefits the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) and Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAF), brought more than $2,050 on its first day of telephone bidding by base per- sonnel. NMCRS Fund Drive Administrative Assistant NCC1 Cynthia Patterson said last year’s goal was to raise $8,000 and $13,059 was actually reached. “This year’s Mediathon goal is to raise $10,000”, said Patterson. “By the close of Monday we were off to a good start at meet- ing that goal.” She added that the Mediathon was only possible due the generous time from volunteers and donations made by the community. Callers placed bids on some of their favorite songs such as Diana Krall’s “Peel Me a Grape” (bidder ACC (AW) Lisa Oliver) to annoying songs like Tiny Tim’s “They’re Coming to Take Me Away” (bidder Lt. Steven Mavica). Other tunes heard included everything from service theme songs to music from AC/DC and Willie Nelson. Callers also bid on donated items that included Beanie Babies, Icelandic sweaters and pottery, Harley Davidson acces- sories, car rentals and fresh off the plane - Cinnabon cinnamon rolls. At press on Wednesday, the grand total for Mediathon was $3,093. Other base wide events included Kef First Class Association Car Wash, $360; Bike-a-thon, $6,100; Khaki Auction; $2,452; Naval Hospital Keflavik Lumpia Sale, $800; Jail- and-Bail, $2,700; NAS Comptrollers Bake Sale, $300. AFAF Event Coordinator Tech Sgt. Dagan Lisenbee said the Bowling Tournament with raffle brought in $700. “We want to show some team spirit and invite the community to come out to Friday’s barbecue from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the media center,” said Lisenbee. “Proceeds from the barbecue will benefit both fund dri- ves equally.” Friday’s 60s Day will also include a Dunk Tank event at 25 cents a vote, $3 balls for three balls that begins at 1 p.m. Car I nsurafic!
