Photographer chronicles life at NAS Keflavik
By J02 Stephen Slieedy
Given the challenges
and stresses involved in
their own lives and jobs,
many service members
do not realize the amount
of activity that occurs
every day at NAS
Keflavik. Patients are
constantly seen at Naval
Hospital Keflavik, the
Public Works Depart-
ment continues their
building and quality of
life projects and the 85th
Group keeps an eye on
the skies over Iceland.
This is just a tiny sam-
pling of the work that
occurs here around the
clock.
In many cases, family
members are even less
informed about what a
typical day in the military
involves. To shed light on
the subject, a publishing
company dispatched 125
photojournalists to bases
and ships around the

PWD Seabee Selected for Seaman to Admiral Program
Story by
Lt. Cmdr. Mark Geronime
Construction Mechanic
Second Class (Seabee Combat
Warfare) Travis Mortimer from
Vero Beach, Florida, was among
the 433 junior enlisted personnel
Navy-wide selected to receive a
college degree and appointment
as an Ensign in the US Navy.
Over 1,400 qualified applica-
tions were submitted for consid-
eration in this years program.
Travis, who has been in the Navy
for eight years, was truly sur-
prised to be selected, especially
for one of only four Civil
Engineer Corps (CEC) billets
offered. He became interested in
the program after discussing
degree plans with the director of
the Navy College here on base.
Meredith Mortimer, Travis’
spouse, was instrumental in con-
vincing him that he should apply
for the program. Getting the
application completed and sub-
mitting the package was a team
effort. Travis credits Meredith
with having the conviction that
he had the right stuff to be select-
ed for the program.
Travis has narrowed down his
school selection to three
Universities: South Carolina,
Nebraska, and Utah. He has
already applied to and been
accepted for admission to all
three. With 17 credits already
earned through off duty educa-
tion programs, he still has his
work cut out for him. The
Seaman to Admiral CEC pro-
gram will allow him up to 36
months to complete a bachelors
degree in engineering, and he
must maintain a 3.0 minimum
Grade Point Average (GPA). He
