Simple rules keep kids safe this halloween
By James A. Frith
It is that time of the year again where
young base residents will go door-to-door
dressed up like ghouls, goblins, and other
known Halloween icons receiving bags of
goodies. To ensure a safe night parents and
base residents should be aware the following
safety issues.
Iceland’s unique weather conditions such
as extreme winds, rain and snow should be
considered before allowing children to go
around to the housing units. Children should
wear reflective tape on their costumes and
bags, and use light colored trick-or-treat
bags. Flashlights are also recommended.
Small or young children should be accompa-
nied by a parent or responsible person, and
at no time should they be left alone. The cos-
tumes worn should be flame resistant and
made of visible colors. Costumes should
also be loose enough to fit over warm
clothes and short enough to prevent injuries
from tripping. Children should avoid cross-
ing open fields, and walk on the sidewalks
instead. If sidewalks are not in the area chil-
dren should walk facing the direction of
incoming traffic. Open or unwrapped candy
should not be accepted. Make sure to watch
out for black ice that may be present in some
areas.
Parents escorting the children should do
the following things to help keep trick-
treaters safe. In the past years it has been
shown that the traffic up and down the stair-
wells can cause falling hazards. To prevent
this it is suggested that occupants of the
housing units should pass out candy in the
recreation rooms of the buildings. Drivers
need to remember to watch out for children
and reduce their speeds by 10 kilometers.
If you are planning to walk your child
around base just make sure you follow these
guidelines and you will have a
“Spooktacular” Halloween.
