NAVY Medicine East has given the order to the Commanding Officer CAPT Michael D. McCarten to begin downsizing the facility to a clinic. “We have a lot of work ahead of us relating to planning, staffing, and logistical concerns while we continue to maintain a high level of quality, com- passionate health care for all our beneficiaries,” McCarten said. The main changes will be in the scope of specialty care offered at the Naval Hospital. After June 2,2006, the hospital will no longer offer care in the areas of general surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics and anesthe- sia. These services, currently utilized at the Naval Hospital and in the local community, will exclusively be provided within the civilian network/Icelandic Health Care system. Naval Hospital will continue to be staffed with fam- ily physicians who will continue to provide the wide scope of outpatient care they currently give. The medical staff has been working with Icelandic healthcare authorities in Keflavik and Reykjavik to ensure a smooth transition next summer. “Many details remain to be worked out,” McCarten said, “but our main focus is that our beneficiaries continue to receive high quality, family centered, health care.” USNH Kefavik celebrates Radiologic Technologist, Periopertive Nurse Weeks The U.S. Naval Hospital Keflavik celebrated the contributions of Radiologic services and technology in the healthcare profession during National Radiologic Technologist Week Nov. 6-12. On Nov. 8, 1895, while in his lab working with a Crookes-Hittorf vac- uum tube, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen a German Scientist and his assistant stumbled upon an unknown particle or energy that illuminated some Barium Platinocyanide paper located nine feet away. Charging the tube with electricity, Roentgen and his assistant covered the tube with a box so that light was unable to be emitted from the tube. While doing this they both noticed that whichever way they moved the paper it still luminesced. Roentgen named the unknown particle X-ray after the mathematical expression “X” which frequently stands for an unknown quantity. The Radiology Department in the Hospital here provides quality, routine diagnostic imaging and ultrasound ser- vices using state of the art equipment. They provide service to all eligible beneficiaries, active duty and their family members. The Radiology Department is avail- able for routine services Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. A duty technologist is on call after hours for all emergent care. As part of this year’s celebration, the radiology department put out a poster board and video display showing the history, current application, and future technological advances and radiologi- cal contributions to medicine. We would like to recognize and con- gratulate our Radiologic Technologists, Hospital Corpsmen 1st Classes Blong Thao, Gerard Yumul and Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Ledante Long for their outstanding contributions to Navy Medicine. “What is essential is invisible to the eyes. ” from Little Prince by Antoine De Saint Exupery Perioperative Nurse Week is an opportunity to share with the world the knowledge and expertise they bring to the perioperative profession. The U.S. Naval Hospital Keflavik celebrates Perioperative Nurse Week November 13-19 by recognizing LCDR Duane Kemp and LT Detrik Harmeyer. Perioperative N urse Week highlights the history, current opportunities, and future challenges of perioperative nursing. This time of recognition has provided a forum for perioperative nurses to share with the public their responsi- bilities and dedication to providing the best care possible for surgical patients. In 1979, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) House of Delegates approved a resolution requesting that, “AORN promote a day each year to consumer education to enhance public knowl- edge regarding our perioperative role.” November 14 was designated as OR Nurse Day, and a few years later, the observation was expanded to a full week. Since 1979, individual members, AORN chapters, hospitals, and other medical facilities have organized spe- cial events and utilized other forms of publicity to help educate the pub- lic about the diverse roles performed by perioperative registered nurses. In 2000, “OR Nurse Week” was updat- ed to “Perioperative Nurse Week,” to more accurately reflect the broad spec- trum of patient care services provided to surgical patients by perioperative registered nurses. USNH PCMs recertify All of the medical staff at Naval Hospital Keflavik is licensed providers through state and government agen- cies. Many of our providers are also Board Certified Specialists. This requires a provider to meet certain guidelines set forth from their state of licensure. All Board Certified Specialists are required to periodically re-certify. During this time you may experience difficulty in booking an appointment with your Primary Care Manager (PCM) due to this process. If so, one of our other highly quali- fied providers will see you if needed while your PCM is away during this Board Certification process.
