0. XIII, No. 56 U.S. Naval Station, Keflavik, Iceland December 2, 1970
First eleven housing units open;
11 more opening before Christmas
With the wind climbing, snow beginning to fall and a storm brewing,
the blue ribbon was cut Monday in ceremonies that officially opened
the new enlisted housing for base personnel.
Rear Admiral John K. Beling, ComIDF, closed the scissors that cut
the ribbon that opened the first
increment of houses in a proposed
program of 100 new units.
Before Christmas another in-
crement, 11 units, will be made
available to enlisted personnel,
and by sometime in March all of
the 100 units will have been
opened.
The units, 88 two-bedroom and
four four-bedroom, have all been
constructed after the basic con-
struction found in Iceland. All
are concrete reinforced, with wood
and metal roofs, and above all
eyare extremely warm...previous
:fab houses could not boast the
th factor in the cold Ice-
andic winds. The new houses are
similar to 140 units completed in
the 1968 housing program which
were completely occupied last
April.

new quarters are reminded that

and
land
In a world of firsts, last
Saturday was a "number one" for
Iceland as the first Boeing 747
landed at the Keflavik airport.
The giant three decker plane
landed at 10:15 a.m. enroute to
Los Angeles from London. Because
of repairs being made on the nor-
mal runway used by the Boeing
747's out of London a shorter
runway had to be used which ne-
cessitated a lesser load of fuel
on the take off. To make up for
the shortage in fuel the 747 made
history and landed at Keflavik
for refueling.

Mary Kelt wait for Rear Adm. John K. Beling, ComIDF, to
cut the ribbon that officially opened the new enlisted
quarters on the naval station last Monday.

More cuts, early outs
Cuts or early outs must be the
object of more rumors in the Navy
than any other subject. However
over the Thanksgiving weekend a
long awaited message on the sub-
ject was released...it's no rumor.
The personnel in ratings of
ADR, CT, ML and SD who are sched-
uled to be released between the
beginning of next April through
the end of July will be separated
during January. In addition those
who are scheduled to get out in
August and September will instead
be separated during the months of
February and March.
For those personnel who are not
in the above ratings, there is
the three month early out which
now extends to include those who
are due to be released during the
months of April, May and June
1971.
