Bodies: treat yours right,
or that’s all that will be left
by Margaret Bekker
Pollution! Ecology! Some of you may already be tired of hearing
those words, but it's possible that many of you are not fully aware
of the pollution problems being faced by practically every nation in
the world. ___________________________

Suddenly, in the seventies,
people are becoming concerned
about their environment, and the
terrible things we have allowed
to happen. Scientists in the U.S.
Great Britain have estimated
that if we continue to pollute
the earth at the current rate the
human race could come to an end
around the year 2000. "Well" you
say, "talking about the year
2000 is like talking about science
fiction." Look again — the year
2000 is only 29 years away. Not a
very pleasant thought is it? We
can't sit back and expect the
government to clear things up.
Everyone has to pull his share
of the load to correct the many
mistakes into which our advanced
technology has led us.
Many of you are asking "What
can I do?" To tell you all of the
things you could do would probab-
ly take a good two-hour discus-
sion, (an idea for a wives' club
or PTO meeting?) but you can make
start in your own home, and
'right on, and within, your own
body. How?
We have heard about the pollu-
tion of our air and water, but
what about pollution of our bod-,
ies from food and cosmetics. Yes,
food and cosmetics. Pick up a
packet of mix, or a jar or can of
something and look at the list of
additives and chemicals. Try to
find out some of the ingredients
which go into beauty aids and
toilet articles, and you'll no
doubt hit a brick wall. "Trade
secrets" you'll be told. Why?
Food is supposed to nourish us
on the inside, and cosmetics, etc.,
are supposed to enhance us on the
outside. 1, for one, want to know
what I'm putting in and on my
y. I wouldn't dream of using
the wrong kind of gas or spark
plugs in a car for which I had
saved my hard-earned money. Why
should I treat my one-and-only
body with any less respect?
Of course, not all of these
chemicals are harmful, but when
we eata bit of this, and a spoon-
ful of that, and use a dab or a
spray of something-or-other, who
knows what the combined chemicals
do to our bodies?
Why worry about the consequen-
ces, when safe products "are"
available?
