you'11 be the only campers around,
since there's plenty of fresh
drinking water. And it's close
plough --- about five hours from
flavik --- to make it practical
a weekend camping trip.
But camping in Shangri-La is
still camping, and it's wise to
keep in mind that most of the odds
are against you.
Camping trips are sometimes
called "pack trips", apparently
because so much of your time is
spent packing. Each person in
your group will need a sleeping
bag, a foam mat to go under it, a
mountain of food, clothes, a cam-
era and many rolls of film, in-
sect repellent, extra shoes, rain-
wear, sun tan lotion, and maybe a
frisbee. Then there are the
"group" items: tents, camp stoves,
lanterns, an ice chest, waterproof
tarps, etc. Loading all this
stuff into and onto your car is
relatively easy. It's making
room for the people that's diffi-
cult. But if you like circuses,
ou'll love camping. Both are
^veiling tent shows.
Remember that unwritten law
at says it always starts raining
when you take down the convertible
top on your car? We discovered
on our trip to Snaefellsnes that
that also applies to the putting-
up of tents. As soon as you find
a spot to set up camp, it will
begin to rain. It will rain hard-
est while you are trying to figure
out just how the tent gets put
together. And it will stop rain-
ingas soon as you get the tent up.
When the rain stops, the bugs
start. Bugs are essential to any
camping trip, and are one of the

few items you don't have to pack.
They are intensely loyal crea-
tures and will stick with you no
matter what. Feeding is no prob-
lem, they will eat what you eat.
Often they will eat you.
But by far the strangest thing
about the camping experience is
that somehowonce you've returned,
it seems that you've enjoyed
yourself out there in the boon-
docks. You tell yourself that
you "got away from it all", away
from something other than hot wa-
ter and a soft mattress. And you
find yourself planning other camp-
ing trips.
Like down to the South coast,
maybe. Let's see, if four people
split the cost of a jeep for two
days.....
