A ‘rappelling’
situation
One of the many missions of
the Marine Barracks is ground
search and rescue.
As part of the training for
this mission, 120 Marines from
Keflavik scaled the mountain at
Vifilsfell. Due to the work
schedule, the exercise was spread
out over a 3-day period, March 12
to 14.
The training was originallj
slated as cold-weather training,
however, there was a distinct
lack of cold weather. The train-
ing was then devoted to basic
climbing techniques, ropework,
use of rappelling and the ice
axe.
Lieutenant Richard D. Rollins
from the Marine Barracks was in'"
charge of the exercise. He went
all three days of the exercise
(the only other person to go all
three days was HM3 Pat Ashton
from the Naval Station Dispens-
ary) .
The Marines are scheduled to
participate in a joint exercise
with the Hella FBS (an Icelandic
team of ground search and rescu-
ers) May 4 and 5. During this ex|
ercise they will scale Mt. Hekla^
The mountain at Vifilsfell is
located a few miles east of Reyk-
javik .
