The White Falcon - 21.06.1974, Side 5
79105--Commander’s Action Line
CALLER: When I first arrived on the NATO Base,
the Gym was open 24 hours a day. My husband and I
enjoyed using the facilities available late at
night. At this time of the year when it is light
nearly 24 hours, and especially now with the new
pool, why is it not possible to have the facilities
available 24 hours a day?
*C.A.L.: The gym hours were adjusted to satisfy
the usage. After several months of evaluation, it
became obvious that the usage did not justify stay-
ing open for the period after midnight.
CALLER: When do you plan on showing some of the
movies that were featured on the Academy Awards
show on AFRTS last month? These include "The Exor-
cist," "Last Detail" and "The Sting."
*C.A.L.: The Navy Motion Picture Services has
recently bought rights to "The Sting." Indications
are that this movie will be here in about two
weeks. Films stay on base approximately 30 days
before being forwarded. It is not known locally
whether or not the other two films have been pur-
chased by the NMPS.
CALLER: Iceland Defense Force Instruction
7210.IB of Feb. 22 states that Defense Force per-
sonnel may convert up to one month's base pay to
Icelandic kronur or U.S. currency. I think this
should be revised. I don't think it is right that
people should be buying and selling kronur for a
profit.
*C.A.L.: The current policy of allowing recon-
version of kronur in amount equivalent to one
month's net pay plus allowances paid during the
last month in Iceland was carefully formulated with
the concurrence of all major commands in Iceland.
It is intended to provide the individuals departing
Iceland for new assignments with the monetary flex-
ibility required during the difficult month imme-
diatley preceeding departure. The intent of the
instruction is to provide a convenient, legal meth-
od for reconversion of legally acquired kronur and
to reduce the incentive for violation of Icelandic
law and Commander Iceland Defense Force instruc-
tions . Any evidence of profiteering or other il-
legal or improper actions should be presented to
the Commander Iceland Defense Force for appropriate
action.
Youth Center Roundup
A sock hop at 7 p.m. kicked-
off the Marathon held at the
Youth Center June 14.
The Marathon started at mid-
night and there was pizza, the
movie Puppet on a Chain, a dance
contest, breakfast and by 6 a.m.
some very tired people.
Youth Center sources said
everybody seemed to have had a
good time including the chaper-
ones. All made it to the 6 a.m.
hour with the exception of one.
Cdr Don Griffiths decided it was
his time to leave at 3 a.m. The
other chaperones who withstood
the marathon and are still alive
to tell about it were: Mr. and
Mrs. Stern, Mr. and Mrs. Chamb-
lee, Mr. and Mrs. Mauro, Mrs.
"Marathoners" watching the
movie.
Griffiths and Mrs. Smith.
Ninety teens turned out for
the hop and 65 stayed to Mara-
thon ."
