Det. 1 took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eleventh inning on a homerun by Ned Shelgrow. Hits by NavFac's Ralph Speakman and Mike Comstock followed by a sacrifice fly tied the game again. In the twelfth, Det. 1 had hits but hits by Allen Day, Allen Labott and Ralph Speakman ended the marathon in NavFac's favor. The leading hitter for Det. -1 was Pat Dowell and for NavFac it was Gary Drinkwater with 4/6. In the second • game of the week, HI Rec battled for supremacy over Speccom defeating them 4-3. Leading hitters for HI Rec were Mike Norton 2/3 and Phil Ankey 2/3. For Speccom, it was Jose Viger and Barney Bauerschmidt, each with 2/3. Speccom's two errors in the second inning were its downfall because Speccom out-hit HI Rec. League by 10 NSGA finished first in the National League with a 10-game lead over CFK, the second'place finisher. NSGA was led by the pitching of Gene Benson and an ex- cellent defense. They have three of the five leading hitters and every man in their lineup is a tough out. They will be favored to addrthe base championship to their long string of victories. CFK edged Weapons and VP-5 for second place mainly on good pitching and hitting. Supply leads in Amer. finals by 3 In the finals for the American Lea- gue championship, Supply has a precari- ous one-game lead over Rockville with three games to go. NCS still has a chance for second. Supply has good hit- ters and improved pitching, but their defense has been hurting them in big games. Rockville has improved in the past three weeks and might well be favored to win the championship. Rock- ville has good hitting and defense and improved pitching. NCS has the best hitting, but their defense undermines their pitching and power. A darkhorse for the playoff is 57th FIS who now seem to have it all together. August brings summer’s end By the end of August it becomes evi- dent that the peak of the summer season has passed; however, in general, the weather conditions of August change only slightly from those experienced in July. The major storm tracks remain mslightly to the south of Iceland and storm cen- ters, which pass over or near Keflavik, continue to be generally weak and dis-’ organized. The average temperature for the month is 50.8F (12.6C), 0.6 (0.4) degrees cooler than July. Prevailing winds are from two quadrants: the northeast for 33.6 percent of the time and the southr west 22.8 percent. Winds from these' quadrants have a mean speed of 11.4 knots. The peak gust for August was? from the west-southwest at 58 knots in 1969. Rain and drizzle can be expected to occur on 68.8 percent of the days, a- mounting to a mean monthly rainfall of 2.90 ins. (73.66mm). Average weather and sky conditions continue to be dom- inated by these periods of rain and drizzle with an average of 77 percent of the skv covered by clouds and overcast conditions occuring 46.2 percent of the time. Fog can be expected in these con- ditions also and it occurs 34.6 percent of the days. The sun will rise on August 1 ' at 4:38 a.m. and set at 1:32 a.m. for a total of 17 hours and 54 minutes of day- light. By the end of the month the hours of daylight have decreased to 14 hours and 42 minutes with sunrise set at 6:08 a.m. .m. and sunset at 8:50 p.m. This is a total loss of 3 hours and 12 minutes over the month. Shepard nabs ‘B’ finals Alan Shepard defeated Tim Cunningham 21-16 and 21-10 in the finals to win Racquetball "B" championship. Shepard features a mean kill, a solid backhand, a dazzling aerial attack and a bewilder- ing boomerang in his arsenal of play. He may try to add Pete Hershfield's scalp to his already long coup, however, Pete has to spot him 10 points. Pete is the racquetball "A" league champion.
