Vikings take HJ5. football crown
by Rtae Mahone
Led by end Paul Everett, the Vikings
captured the A.T. Mahan football cham-
pionship Sunday with a 26-0 whitewashing
of the Toughies. Everett, who scored
two touchdowns and played an outstanding
game on defense, led his team throughout
the tournament.
What was predicted to be a toss-up
match turned out to be a one-sided af-
fair for the Vikings.
The Vikings, operating out of the
single wing formation, got outstanding
play from Frank King, captain and lead-
er of the team.
The Vikings opened the scoring early
in the game when King found the elusive
Everett on a 33-yard pass. The speedy
Everett had worked himself free as he
got behind the Toughie defenders, hauled
in the pass and raced for the goal line.
The try for point was good when King hit
Tom Paolozzi in the end zone as the
Vikings took a 7-0 lead.
After the kickoff, the Vikings held,
forcing the Toughies to punt. King
cranked his offense into action with
short passes to blocking back Don Blish
who gained good yardage around the ends
of the Toughies. When Blish was stopped
he called on fullback Mike Barry, and he
came through with short bursts up the
center of the Toughies line. However,
Marv Martin of the Toughies put a stop
to Barry, so King threw a bomb to Paul
Everett again and this time the speedy
end caught a pass for 40 yards and a
touchdown. Don Blish ran for the point
giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
Martin tried to run around the Viking
line but was stopped by Gary Curl and
linebacker Lance Price. When he tried
to pas^, he was faced by guard Kevin
Dewater who continually sacked him all
afternoon. Martin's punts helped get
the Toughies out of their own end of the
field.
In the second half, the Vikings con-
tinued their onslaught of the Toughies.
King would go to his tricky reverses,
either handing off to his end, Everett,
or keep the ball and run with it. His
running moved the ball down to the
Toughies' three-yard line where he took
the ball in for a score. The attempt
for extra point failed but with the
touchdown, the Vikings had the game all
wrapped up.
The final touchdown of the game came
when Barry found Marc Johnson open in
the end zone and fired a 10-yard strike
for the touchdown. The try for the ex-
tra point failed.
With the score 26-0, the Vikings
tried to go for one more but a pass by
King was intercepted.
The game ended on a sour scale when
tempers flared on both sides, resulting
with one Toughie getting ejected for un-
sportsman-like conduct.
It was a team victory for the Vikings
who outdistanced all opponents with out-
standing plays from Barry, Blish, King
and Paolozzi who operated in the back-
field and from such stalwarts in the
line such as Doug Compton, Curl Everett,
Hare Jonnson, Lance Price, Kevin Dewater
and center Steve Gaines.
