Annual home fire prevention base program
underway
Beginning Monday, the annual home
fire prevention program will start in
^ base housing, a Naval Station Fire De-
partment spokesman states.
To kick off the inspection series, an
v introduction will be aired on NBS Chan-
* nel 4 at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
* The series, which is designed to explore
and prevent fire hazards, will also in-
clude the Exit Drill in the Home Program
(Operation "EDITH").
NBS Radio 1484 and Channel 4 will air
•ial announcements daily to remind
kants of the next day’s inspection

a weekly inspection schedule.
Fire Department officials will call
| each household between 5 and 7 p.m. the
night before scheduled inspections so
that occupants may adjust their rou-
tine.
Fire prevention films are also
scheduled for airing on Channel 4 to
inform base residents of fire safety
and prevention.
Visiting fire inspectors will dis-
cuss and issue fire escape planning
material to base families. Additional-
ly, inspectors will assist in imple-
menting a fire escape plan to use
during Operation "EDITH". Operation
"EDITH" is planned to occur Oct. 9 at
5:20 p.m. A siren will be sounded at
5:30 to indicate an "all out" exer-
cise .
As a followup to the inspection
series, Fire Chief Sveinn Eiriksson
will send letters to base families.
These letters will detail the inspec-
tion results with recommended changes.
Automatic smoke detectors installed
in "pre-fab" buildings and semi-perma-
nent housing will be tested and bat-
teries replaced as needed. Smoke detec-
tors installed downstairs will be re-
moved, leaving only one smoke detector
on the second floor of each apartment.
The removed smoke detectors will be
placed in other family quarters, start-
ing with the 670 housing area.
Stickers that indicate where children
or invalids may be expected to sleep
will be affixed to appropriate places
during this year's home inspection.
Naval Station family quarters will
be inspected the first week as follows:

9:30 a.m. to noon: Bldg. 1000, 1001,
1002, 1003.
1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Bldg. 1004, 1005,
1006.
4 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Bldg. 1007, 1008,
1031.
TUESDAY
9:30 a.m. to noon: Bldg. 1032, 1033,
1034.
1 p.m. to 1037. 3:30 p.m. , : Bldg. 1035, 1036,
4 p.m. to 1040. 6 p.m.: Bldg. 1038, 1039,
WEDNESDAY
9:30 a.m. to noon: Bldg. 1041, 1042,
1043, 1047.
1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. .: Bldg. 1044, 1045.

Icelandic Ambassador gives praise
Rear Admiral Karl J. Bernstein has
been awarded the Defense Superior Ser-
vice Medal, the United States' sixth
highest military award, for his service
as Commander Iceland Defense Force.
The presentation was made Aug. 18 by
Vice Admiral George E. R. Kinnear II,
Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic
Fleet, when RAdm. Bernstein was relieved
as Commander Iceland Defense Force by
Rear Admiral Richard A. Martini.
Admiral Bernstein commanded the Defense
Force from August 1976 to August 1978.
The citation accompanying the award
praised Admiral Bernstein for "excep-
tionally superior service."
Citing his "dynamic leadership and
statesmanship", He was praised for main-
taining the Defense Force "at the high-
est level of readiness."
He was further praised for contribut-
ing "directly to the enhancement of rela-
tions between the Governments of the
United States and Iceland by encouraging
and personally involving himself in un-
precedented intergovernmental communica-
tion" and by "ensuring the timely imple-
mentation of United States military ob-
ligations under intergovernmental agree-
ments."
RAdm. Bernstein's next assignment
will be as Commandant Naval District of
Washington, DC.

Highlighting the Naval Station change
of command Tuesday, Ambassador Pall A.
Tryggvason, guest speaker, praised Cap-
tain Jack T. Weir for his efforts to
beautify the base during the past two
years.
^ The ceremony marked the first day of
®ity for Captain Thomas J. Keene, Com-
Inander Naval Forces Iceland/Commanding
Officer Naval Station Keflavik. Captain
Jack T. Weir will report to the Office
of the Chief of Naval Operations, Wash-
ington, DC.
Ambassador Tryggvason thanked the
captain on behalf of the Icelandic com-
munity for his work to eliminate base
eyesores such as old quonset huts, de-
bris and even World War II remnants.
In his remarks, the ambassador stated
that the occasion was the first time
that an Icelander had been invited to
speak at a change of command in Ice-
land. Furthermore, the ambassador then
stressed that Capt. Weir had always
striven to promote mutual admiration
and goodwill, regardless of personal
differences, as co-chairman of the Ice-
land ic-American Defense Council.
The ambassador also emphasized Capt.
Weir's leadership, devotion to duty
and personal concern for the welfare of
all for whom he was responsible.
Having recently received the Ice-
landic Order of the Falcon for outstand-
ing achievement, Capt. Weir restated
that he had used "every ounce of energy"
to uphold each individual on the Naval
Station. Capt. Weir summed up his re-
marks by stressing the fellowship that
he has shared with everyone during his
tenure here. Secondly, he expressed
his appreciation for the competent
leadership that supported him during his
tour.
Dignitaries who attended the cere-
mony include the American Ambassador to
Iceland James J. Blake, Deputy Secretary
General of the Ministry of Foreign Af-
fairs Hurthur Helgason, Rear Admiral
Julian J. Thomas, DC, Inspector General
and Rear Admiral Richard A. Martini,
Commander Iceland Defense Force.
