Before erecting the tree, saw off the trunk at an angle at least one inch above the origi- nal cut. Place the freshly cut trunk in a container of water and keep the level above the cut the entire time the tree is indoors. Support the tree well, and don't locate it near sources of heat (ra- diators or stoves), or where it will block the way out of a room or an apartment. b. The lighting you use should be electric.Be sure to check light- ing sets for frayed cables, loose connections and broken sockets. Don't plug too many extensions into one circuit. Look for U/L label of approval. c. Candles should be avoided. However, if you do use them, make certain that the candle is well situated away from combustibles. Don't use combustible candle hold- ers . d. The gifts are not to be overlooked in the fire safety rules. Toys which are operated by alcohol, kerosene or gasoline are dangerous to children and should be supervised by adults when used. Look for the U/L label. Dispose of gift wrap- pings promptly. Either fold them neatly together or place them in metal trash containers as soon as possible. e. Have your fire escape plan up to date. Discuss with all mem- bers of the family what to do in case of fire in the middle of the night. Rehearse your plan. Does your smoke detector work? Test it. Remember, the fire phone number is 17. Advent Symbols 'Wreathing Symbols have been called silent teachers. These are universally used; each one conveys what would otherwise take any words to ex- press . The Advent Wreath is such a symbol, or to put it more correct- ly, it is a combination of several symbols. The Advent Wreath is a contri- bution of the German and Scandi- navian traditions. It developed out of the simple use of an ever- green spray of fir, spruce, balsam or pine placed eear the hearth. Originally, the wreath was plain, without any ornamentation of ribbon or bow. The purple ribbon or bows that have been added to the wreath down through the years symbolize "Royalty"—"Behold, your King comes to you." The evergreen of the wreath represents the eternal life that is ours only in Christ. The advent candles are arranged on the spray or wreath and are symbolic of the coming of Jesus, the Living Light of the World. He is the Light that broke forth (-------------------------> 12 more shopping days until Christmas v-----------------J The Word’ on the world on that first Christ- mas when He was born the Prince of Peace. He is the Light that gradually penetrated into all the earth through the Gospel. The traditional act of light- ing one more candle each week, or each day, tells of the increas- ingly brighter Light of His coming, and leads gradually to the blaze of light at the dawn- ing of Christmas. Traditionally using four candles for the four weeks of Advent, a spefific meaning has been attached to each, candle. The first has been called the Prophecy Candle, an- nouncing the period of waiting. The second is the Bethelem Candle, symbolic of the preparation being made to receive and to cradle the Christ Child. The third is the Shepherd's Candle, which typifies the act of sharing Christ. The fourth is the Angel's Candle of love and final coming. The larger (white) Christ Can- dle is placed in the center of these four purple candles and is to be lighted on Christmas Eve.
