Disc brakes require
different technique
The increase in the use of disc
brakes on vehicles necessitates a
change in braking technique under
slippery conditions.
For years, people have been ad-
vised to pump our brakes when
stopping in order to avoid skid-
ding. Disc brakes, unlike drum
brakes, do not release immediately
when pressure on the pedal is re-
leased.
With disc brakes, there is a
time lag when pressure has been
exerted and then released. The
pumping action, when used with
disc brakes, could cause a momen-
tary lockup of the wheel which
would result in loss of rolling
traction and increase the likeli-
hood of a skid, especially under
slippery conditions.
It must be realized that the
principle of maintaining rolling
traction still holds true with
disc brakes, but the procedure to
do so has changed.
It is recommended that drivers
with vehicles equipped with disc
brakes apply an easy, steady pres-
sure on the brake pedal just short
of lockup. This should be follow-
ed by an easy but slight let up of
pressure. The process is then re-
peated.
Drivers must be careful not to
exert sudden or hard pressure to
the brakes, since the drag of the
disc brake will cause momentary
lockup and increase the chance of
losing control due to a skid.
With disc brakes, a modulation
of the brake pedal is much more
effective on slippery roadways
than a pumping action. For some
drivers, this technique will be
more difficult, but with practice
it will definitely be worth the
time and effort.
