Page 2 August 8, 1980 NATO Forces to receive 18 E-3As..* NATO personnel are training on the Air Force's most advanced airborne surveillance, command and control aircraft, the E-3A Sentry, at Tinker AFB, Okla. The NATO E-3A's will be stationed at Geilenkirchen AB, West Germany. NATO forces are scheduled to receive the first of 18 E-3A's in early 1982. Tinker is the main operating base of the U.S. Air Force's entire E-3A fleet. NATO airmen from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, West Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, and the United States will participate in some aspect of the training program. The E-3A is designed to strengthen and improve allied air defense systems in Europe. It is a modified Boeing 707-320 airframe with a 30 foot rotating dome atop the fuselage. Advanced airborne radar, coupled with an on-board computer and communications system, provides military commanders the capability to manage tactical air forces in a wide variety of contingencies. The NATO E-3A purchase represents the most significant cooperative equipement program in the alliance's history. It is the first major weapon system to be purchased by the alliance as a whole. DEER Computer--Who is registeredZ The Defense Enrollment/Eligibility Reporting System, called DEERS, has arrived on the West Coast. It began operation at Uniformed Services instal- lations in Central and Northern California, Oregon, and Nevada (less the Las Vegas area) on August 1st. Personnel support activity detachments at Treasure Island, Alameda, Oakland, Moffett Field, Mare Island, Lemoore, Monterey, Centerville Beach, Fallon, and Portland are involved. Ships and squadrons homeported in the enrollment area are also participating. Initially, the system's primary use will be in the health care area DEERS uses a computer-registration program to make quick eligibility chec on active duty and retired members and their facilities. DEERS safeguar entitlements of service personnel by identifying ineligible people who ma; apply for health care. In the future the program will be used in commis- saries and exchanges. The system combats fraud and waste and also provides planners with a more accurate picture of the beneficiary population.
