★BASEBALL—The Detroit Tigers retired A1 Kaline's familiar
number five during ceremonies between games of Sunday's
doubleheader against the Texas Rangers. It's the first time
in club history that the Tigers have retired a number.
Kaline was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame three weeks ago.
★AUTO RACING—French driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille cut it close as he won
Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix Formula One Race with a one-second winning
margin. But Jabouille said he was lucky to finish the race at all as his
tires probably wouldn't have lasted another lap. Close behind for the
final few laps and finishing second was Australian Alan Jones, who widened
his lead in the overall standings and remains the favorite for this year's
Formula One World Championship. CALE YARBOROUGH pulled away in the last
12 laps to win Sunday's Michigan 400 Grand National Stock Car Race. He
took the lead following a pit stop during the fourth yellow flag of the
race.
★TRACK AND FIELD—At a meet in Nice, France, Americans Stanley Floyd and
Mary Decker both set records Sunday. Floyd w’on the 100 meters in 10.27
seconds while Decker overcame an achilles tendon injury to win the women's
1500 meters in 4:00:33. FORMER OLYMPIC MEDALIST ROD DIXON outran a field
of 4000 competitors from around the world to win the 7.1 mile Falmouth
Road Race in Massachusetts. Grete Waitz of Norway set a record of
37:00:10 in winning the women's division of that event.
★TENNIS—Czechoslovakia's Ivan Lendl won the singles crown of the
Canadian Open International Tennis Tournament Sunday as top seeded Bjorn
Borg was forced, to drop out of the finals with an injury. Earlier in the
week John Mcenroe and Martina Navratilova were forced out of competition
with injuries. Chris Evert Lloyd won the women's title with a 6-3, 6-1
victory over Virginia Ruzici of Romania. SECOND-SEEDED GENE MAYER took a
6-2, 6-1 win over third-seeded Victor Amaya in the singles final of the
Western Tennis Open in Cleveland.
★GOLF—Curtis Strange won his third tournament in the last 12 months and
picked up a $72,000 check for his victory in the Westchester Golf Classic
in Harrison, New York. Two strokes back in second place was Gibby Gilbert
with Phil Hancock another stroke back in third place. Among three golfers
tied for fourth was Tom Watson who finished four strokes behind the
winner Strange. ARNOLD PALMER was the winner in the $100,000 Interna-
tional Golf Classic in Edmonton, Canada. Palmer, who will be 51 next
month, almost blew a four shot lead on the last three holes, but held on
for a one-stroke victory over Japan's Isao Aoki. It was the first win in
five years for Palmer, who had a 72-hole total of 271—nine under par.
BETH DANIEL, for the second year in a row, took the Patty Berg Golf Cham-
pionship in Maplewood, Minnesota. Daniel, who is only in her second year
on the LPGA tour, finished with a two-shot margin over Hollis Stacy.
★THEY SAID IT—Don James, University of Washington Football Coach, on
the advantage of having one of his players named to the Playboy preseason
All Star Team: "I like it because it's the one time a year that my wife
lets me buy the magazine." REGGIE WILLIAMS, Cincinnatti Bengal Linebacker
assessing his physical assets: "Speed, strength and the ability to
recognize pain immediately." RAY FISHER, a Chrysler corporation exucutive
presenting Nancy Lopez with a trophy honoring her as the LPGA's Player of
the Year: "At least one of us had a good year." JOE NIEKRO, Houston
Astro 21-game winner in 1979, asked how he expected to pitch this season:
"Righthanded."
★AROUND THE BASE—There will be a Racquetball tourney on Aug. 30 and 31
and it will include class A and Open singles. The tournament is sponsored
by LEACH, and there is an entry fee. Registration begins Monday. THE
FALL RUN OFF will be held Sept. 1 and will begin at the gym. There will
be Men, Womens and Masters categories for 10,000 meters and two-mile runs.
