Santa comes early
for Hofn children
The children from the town of Hofn
had a special treat Saturday when
personnel from the remote Hofn (H-3)
site gave a Christmas party complete
with candy, Santa and presents.
The party began at 10 a.m. with
Christmas cookies, candy, popcorn
and soft drinks in the NCO Club at
the Hofn site. Later, when all the
goodies had miraculously vanished,
they watched cartoons in the Hofn
theater.
After watching Pink Panther and
Bugs Bunny, they were treated to
hamburgers and french fries at the
NCO Club. The movie, "Herbie Goes
Bananas" followed lunch, along with
the appearance of one of Det. 14's
"Jolly Green Giants." Many children
rushed outside thinking Santa Claus
had arrived, but, alas, it was only
LT Ken Love from the hospital coming
to inspect Hofn's mess kitchen.
After a tour of the "Jolly Green
Giant," it was time for pinatas.
The first pinata was a bird that just
didn't want to break—the stick broke
twice before the pinata finally
spilled its candy contents. Two
more pinatas were successfully at-
tacked and their contents quickly
filled pockets and mouths of the
eager children.
Santa Claus arrived at the theater
amid screams from the older children,
and the joyous cries of the younger
kids. Instant photographs were
taken of each child on Santa's lap
and each received a stocking of
goodies and a present to put under
the tree.
Many base organizations donated
time, effort and money to help make
Hofn's Annual Christmas Party a
success. The USO contributed 132
lbs. of hamburger patties, with the
french fries coming from Public
Works. The Hispanic-American Club
made the pinatas. The cookies and
candy were contributed by Fil-Am,
Protestant and Catholic Women of
the Chapel, and the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The Catholic Chaplains Fund con-
tributed $700, while the Protes-
tant Chaplains Fund took care of
the 150 gifts the children were
given. The Windbreakers Wives
Club added 400 candy canes.
It was after dark before
everyone went home, with full
tummies, full pockets—and full
hearts.
‘I'll get it next time!'
Goodies galore!
