Swim and Stay Fit with the Red Cross
Swimming has long been recognized as one
of the best ways of building and maintain-
ing fitness. The Red Cross Swim and Stay
Fit program is a planned activity to en-
courage individuals to swim regularly and
frequently.
Any person possessing reasonable swim-
ming ability is eligible to enroll in the
program. Swim and Stay Fit is not a com-
petition or race between enrol lees, rather
is designed to contribute to the mental
and physical fitness of the individuals.
This is done by providing a meaningful
and enjoyable activity over an extended
period of time.
The overall distance the swimmer goes
is unlimited. For the initial three miles
the only requirement is that the swimmer
complete each % mile during one visit to
the pool. However, the % mile doesn't
have to be swum continuously and the
swimmer can stop and rest as often as
necessary. After the initial three miles
of training, the % mile or more must be
continuous and in multiples of % mile,
such as % mile, one mile, etc.
In order to complete training, laps
down and back pool lanes must be com-
pleted. One lap is actually two lengths
of the pool. Eight laps is % mile,
16 laps equates to % mile, and one mile
is 32 laps.
Following the completion of 10, 20,
30, 40 and 50 miles, a certificate is
given. Together with the 50-mile certi-
ficate, a patch and pin are awarded in
recognition. If a swimmer continues on
and reaches 100, 150, 200 or more miles,
recognition is awarded at each 50-mile
accomplishment.
The 50 miles needn't be completed here
in Keflavik. If you are ready to trans-
fer. paperwork can be sent along with you
so that you can finish your training at
your next duty station.
For more information, contact the Red
Cross office at 6210 or speak with the
program monitor at the pool.

Rockies future unsure
The National Hockey League board of
Govenors met with league president John
Ziegler in New York Tuesday.
The officials are attempting to re-
solve the financial crises of the Colorado
Rockies and the club's proposed move to
New Jersey.
The Colorado committee, a special group
assigned to the matter, is expected to
make a recommendation later in the day.
Board member Peter Pocklington, the
owner of the Edmonton Oilers, says there
are many things to be considered. "We
have to know if it's best for the league."
Owner Peter Gilbert purchased the team
for seven million dollars in February 1981
and lost some four million dollars this
year.

Tilley staying with Cardinals
Wide receiver Pat Tilley, who had de-
manded to be traded, now says he is con-
tent to play for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The seven-year veteran was the team's
top pass receiver the past four years.
He had 66 receptions four just over one
thousand yards and three touchdowns last
season.
Tilley had demanded to be traded
earlier this year in a contract dispute
with the team. However, he said he
would report to the team's mini-camp
which began workouts earlier this week.
