Arctic Sportsmen
take first place,
All Stars picked
The Arctic Sportsmen captured first
place in the senior league Saturday by a
half game when they beat Hospital 9 to 8
in extra innings.
The Sportsmen had to overcome a 3% game
deficit to take first in the final games
of the season. They won five of their
last six games.
Saturday's hard fought game went
extra innings. The Arctic Sportsmen
jumped out to a two to zero lead but
Hospital took charge and held a two-run
lead going into the bottom of the seventh
and final inning. With two outs and no
men on, Cozel Spencer walked, stole second
and third, and scored on Tim Nash's ground
rule double. Nash then stole third and
scored on John Earley's hit. The game went
into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth Robert Sheppard
homered with one man on to give Hospital a
two run lead. With one out, Tim Nash
unloaded a powerful homer to cut the lead
to one. John Austin came to the plate
with bases loaded and with two strikes on
the count he singled in the winning run.
The Senior League All Stars have been
selected and they leave for a grueling schedule of eight games in England Thursday. Kellogg seeks million-plus
(UPI)--The Indiana Pacers say they are
having a hard time signing top draft pick
Clark'Kellogg, a former student at Ohio
State. Pacer General Manager Bob
Salyers says he's optimistic a deal will
be worked out but right now the two sides
are far apart. Kellogg is seeking a
mi 11ion-dol1ar-plus contract.
Cowens may sign with Suns
(UPI)--The Phoenix Suns have given
former Boston Celtic star Dave Cowens a
private tryout and may sign the center,
who retired two years ago. In June,
Cowens said he wanted to return to the NBA
but didn't think he would fit in with the
Celtics.
NFL players support strike
(UPI)--A player's union representative
says the NFL players "overwhelming" support
calling a strike, if necessary. The
player's association took a strike vote.
Executive director Ed Garvey says, "well
more" than the required two-thirds voted
their support for ;a strike.
Broncos' Thompson retires
(UPI)--Veteran safety Bill Thompson has
retired from the Denver Broncos. Thompson,
who holds two pro records, spent 13 sea-
sons with the Broncos after joining them
as a third-round draft pick in 1969. As a
rookie, he lead the AFL in punt returns
and kickoff returns, the only rookie to
ever accomplish that feat. He also holds
the record for turning fumble recoveries
into touchdowns with four during his
career.
Stay of Raider move denied
San Francisco (AP)--A federal appeals
court has denied the NFL's request for a
stay of the Raider's move from Oakland to
Los Angeles. The refusal means that the
league has apparently run out of ways to
block the move prior to the start of the
1982 season.
The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
in San Francisco refused to grant the stay
just two hours after a hearing on the case
Monday. The three-judge panel says the
league and the Oakland Coliseum failed to
show that the "balance of hardships" tip-
ped in their favor.
