RALLY 82 Iceland's international car rally starts today. The annual event, sponsored by a local firm in conjunction with the Automobile Sports Club of Reykjavik, ends on Sunday. Today's route takes the drivers from Reykjavik to Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss and then through the highlands to the north coast. Once there, the drivers turn round and return by the same gruel- ling route. On Saturday the rally drivers will take the road past Selfoss in the southern lowlands (with many deviations to make things interesting). To make sure there is a real test of driving skills and well prepared automobiles the route then fol- lows the back roads past the volcano Hekla and'onto cross country tracks through vol- canic deserts behind the Myrdalsjokul1 glacier. The rally then continues for about ten miles on the gravel-topped road between Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Once again, the drivers turn around and follow the same route back to Reykjavik. On Sunday the rally passes the NATO base. After leaving Reykjavik the cars drive through Kopavog, Gardabaer and Hafnafjordur. They then leave the main road to follow the old cross country route towards Keflavik. On reaching the gas station at the bot- tom of the hill leading to the main base gate the drivers turn up the hill and make a left onto the Hafnir road thus passing between the base and the Patterson Ramp area. They follow the road to Hafnir then take the cross country route to Grindavik. Continuing along the coastal road their next turn around point is at Djupavatn lake. They then follow the same route back to Reykjavik. The first cars to pass the NATO base will arrive at shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday, with the last one returning at about 1:15 p.m. Spectators are asked not to pafk on the road or to cause any ob- struction which could endanger safety. This rally is of growing importance on the international scene. It is, for in- stance, one of only two that professional drivers from Italy take part in outside their home country. They consider the East African Safari Rally and Iceland's Ljoma-Rally to be the toughest challenge for driver and machine. Anyone interested in following the day to day results of the competition is wel- come to visit the Rally headquarters at the Hotel Loftleidir in Reykjavik.
