of service that sat-
isfies the custom-

LT Cording comes

IDF hosts Gardur
retirement group
You can feel the joy and appreciation
when you clasp a hand that is reluctant to
let go. These words were echoed from a
group of volunteers from the Iceland De-
fense Force, who donated their time and
efforts in helping the Gardur Retirement
Home.
The Gardur Retirement Home, which open-
ed October 30, 1976, houses 23 residents
from ages 69 to 96. The IDF volunteers,
headed by co-chairpersons Mary Connor and
Sher Schroeder, have arranged many activi-
ties for the residents.
The Chapel Youth Choir sang one evening
and some IDF volunteers took a Christmas
tree to the home. The tree was a donation
from RADM Ronald F. Marryott with the de-
corations provided by the volunteers. IDF
presented the home with a VCR and a case
of blank tapes.
Plans include future visits to the home
and/or the scheduling of monthly activi-
ties for the residents. Despite the lang-
uage barrier, with the residents speaking
no English and visitors speaking little
Icelandic, the handshakes and the smiles
have made each experience a rewarding one
for both the home residents and the IDF
volunteers.
Not only have IDF volunteers visited the
home, but the residents have had a chance
to view the NATO Base. Last week they were
given a windshield tour of the facilities.
Any IDF members or their spouses who
would like to be involved with the project
can contact the committee chairpersons --
Mary, at 4667, or Sher, at 7310.
