2 THE WHITE FALCON/Sepfember 23, 1983 Bringing in the sheep / Banking, from 1 disruption in service. "Ail customers have to do is eventually order a new supply of checks," says Mr. Schlagheck. The initial supply of checks will be provided free of charge. American Express has made a number of customer service enhancements in recent years which should improve the banking ser- vices available to military personnel. A major automation campaign is nearly comp- lete and AEIBC has installed state-of-the- art data processing equipment throughout Europe. This new equipment will bring bank customers "Next day" account information. With the new equipment in place, busi- ness transacted at any location is reflected in banking reports by 9 a.m. the next day. "When Iceland, the U.K. and Heidelberg are connected to our network," Schlagheck ex- palined, "this kind of information will be typical of the type of service our clients can expect." The AEIBC officer went on to comment on other aspects of the military banking pro- gram, noting some of the advantages of doing business with a military or community bank. "Many military personnel have complained that their account statements from state- side banks are slow to reach them. We pro- vide our customers with iaster account statements than would probably be available from‘a stateside bank moving paper to Asia or Europe by mail," he said. In addition to operational improvements, AEIBC has also developed a financial man- agement education program to help better aquaint the military community with money management, check balancing, savings plan- ning and other financial planning concepts such as how to establish credit references. Videotapes, slide shows and brochures will be made available to community banking fa- cility customers to acquaint them with a number of techniques for better money man- agement. AEIBC is anxious to introduce these materials to your area. AEIBC's officers are confident that their management transition will be smooth and some of their innovations will make lo- cal banking more convenient. As Mr. Schl- agbeck expressed it: "Our goal is to pro- vide and expand the kind of friendly bank- ing services that are available at hometown banks, but tailored to the unique needs of U.S. military personnel abroad." Other staff members at American Express voiced the same commitment and explained the mech- anics of their bank's contract with the Department of Defense (DOD). They indicate that community banking facility charges are set by DOD and are kept competitive with stateside bank charges. Likewise, DOD es- tablishes branch locations and operating hours. Like other military banking con- tractors, AEIBC receives a flat fee for managing DOD's banking facilities. The DOD absorbs all profits from the operation as well as any losses. 2®3f|tte,3|ttlcDn The WHITE FALCON is published weekly by the Iceland Defense Force Public Affairs Office for military and civilian personnel and their dependents stationed in Iceland.
