"Designated drivers" needed
A new campaign was started
last week that will last indefin-
itely. Club patrons in groups of
three or more may designate one
member of their party to serve as
the "designated driver." This
person will receive a "no thanks"
button entitling him or her to
free coffee and soft drinks as
well as a "special" non-alcoholic
beverage. The "designated driver"
will receive also a discount cou-
pon for future food purchases at
the club.
The campaign is part of the
Navy's responsible use of alcohol
program which is designed to pro-
tect service members, their
families and the local community
from alcohol-related accidents
and injuries.
Give a lifetime gift
Mrs. McDaniels at the Navy
Federal Credit Union office has
a Christmas gift idea: She sug-
gests that: "You've given your
family many gifts over the years
-- some forgotten, some discard-
ed and some that just didn't fit.
This year give them a gift worth
keeping -- 1ifetime membership in
the Navy Federal Credit Union
(NFCU). To open an account for
a family member, simply complete
a membership application and
make a minimum share purchase of
$5. Applications are available

Promote the Navy while on leave
"Many of you will be taking
some wel1-deserved leave over
the holidays. I encourage you
to take advantage of this oppor-
tunity to provide a valuable ser-
vice to your Navy.
You will most likely meet
with relatives, close friends
and acquaintances who will be
interested in what you do.
There is no one better able to
tell the story of today's Navy
than those who wear the uniform.
You are our best advertisement.
I suggest that each of you
consider referring those young
people you meet to the local
Navy recruiter. You may also
have time to introduce yourself
to your local recruiter.
I recommend that you make a
note of the Navy's 24-hour toll

Girl Scouts caroling
The Girl Scouts will be carol-
ing for the Keflavik community
in front of the Stapafell Store
on Saturday, December 22 from 3-
4 p.m. Any NATO Base personnel
who would like to join are in-
vited to do so. The girls will
meet at the Mini-mart at 2:30 p.m.

Dates for term 3 are set
College registration for Term
III of the 1984-85 school year
for the University of Maryland
and City Colleges of Chicago will
be held January 7-11, 1985. Term
III begins January 14 and con-
tinues through March 8. Regist-
ration will be held at the Navy
Campus Office in the Viking Mall.
The hours of registration will be
Monday thru Friday,8 a.m.-5 p.m.
The office will be open on Thurs-
day, January 10, from 8 a.m. un-

Sirica's courtroom was buzzing

with Streisand and Redford.
December 1968: Three Americans
(Borman, Lovell and Anders) be-
came the first men to fly around
the moon. Julie Nixon married
David Eisenhower. Most watched
on the tube were Rowan and Mar-
tin's Laugh In, Gomer Pyle and
Bonanza.
December 1963: Lyndon Johnson
held his first presidential news
conference. There were rumors of
a romance between Richard Burton
and Elizabeth Taylor. Roger
Staubach was named the outstand-
ing college back of the year.
December 1958: The Baltimore
Colts defeated the New York Giants
23-17 in sudden-death overtime
to win the NFL championship. Gun-
smoke, Wagon Train, and Have Gun
Will Travel were the top TV shows.
