New ruling expected to protect mail-order shoppers Too many people have shared the experience of ordering merchandise by mail and either getting the package late, or damaged, or the wrong item, or not receiving the package at all. Help is on the way, according to Capt. Thomas Hartmann, assistant staff judge advocate at Chan- ute AFB, Ill. A recent Federal Trade Commission ruling provides new rights for mail-order pur- chasers . For example, he explains, you have the right to know when you can expect your merchandise to be shipped. If an ad or brochure says the seller will "rush" your sewing kit to you in less than a week, then the seller must ship it to you within that time. If no date is specified, you have the right to have your merchandise shipped to you within 30 days. Personal perspective Last week's rare snow storm in Dallas, sparked off this week's question. We asked: What is the most exciting city you've ever been to? Because, If the seller cannot ship the merchandise with- in the stated time or within 30 days, you must have a chance to cancel your order and get all your money back. The seller must notify you of the delay and give you a prepaid postcard to re- ply- If the shipping delay is 30 days or less, you have the right to cancel the order and get your money back. You also have the right to agree to the new shipping date and you have the right not to answer. If you don't answer, the seller can assume you agree to the shipping delay. If the shipping delay is more than 30 days, you must give your express consent to the delay. Otherwise, the seller must return your money at the end of the first 30 days of the delay. Please see SHOPPERS on pg. 7 so many military people travel all over the world, we didn't limit it to any particular country. One person insisted that Dallas was tops. AZCS A1 Curtis - With- out a doubt, Pataya Beach, Thailand. I like the beach, cli- mate, people, and be- cause the place is always readyto swing 24 hours a day. I guess, I just like it there! UTCN Darryl Sirles - Dallas, Dallas, Dallas is the best pi ace to live. It's a live place and I'm proud to be from there. It's a big city that's growing bigger al 1 the time. It surprised me that it snowed, just wish I could have seen it. Gaylene Hatton - I would have to say Toronto. The city is clean and there is a cross section of people: Canadians, Americans, and people from France. There are a lot of things to do there and be- sides my grandparents live in Toronto. Cindy Lewis - It's hard to explain, but I think Denver is the best city. You could pet the horses and we built a snowman as high as the house. I wouldn't recommend Denver to everyone, because other people like different things.
