Revision to open military
housing to all
married E-4's
A recent revision in the military housing pol-
icy will open family housing to all married E-41s
regardless of time in service.
According to information from the Chief of
Naval Operation's office, the new provisions are:
o Single parents attached to deployable units
are eligible.
o A live-in housekeeper can be authorized for
all single parents.
o When a servicemember is married to another
member and both are deployed simultaneously, they
will not be required to vacate housing.
o A servicemember reduced in rate by non-judi-
cial punishment to a status which renders the
member ineligible will be able to remain in the
quarters for the remainder of the assigned tour,
unless eviction is necessary to maintain good or-
der and discipline.
In addition, the message stated that advance
housing applications may be submitted to the new
duty station where housing is desired any time
after permanent change-of-station orders have
been received or home port change has been an-
nounced. Applications may be made by the service-
member or their representative, provided the rep-
resentative has a power of attorney, a copy of
the applicant's orders and record of emergency
data.
While the new housing policy opens the doors
for previously ineligible E-4's,according to Mrs.
Merrie Ott, Keflavik Housing Management Assist-
ant, persons should make additional inquiries be-
fore assuming that he or she is now eligible for
military family housing.
Mrs. Ott added, that, "Due to the housing
shortage here, the standard waiting list must be
adhered to in order to ensure that all eligible
incoming personnel receive housing. For more in-

On December 17, Lt. Col. Donald Jay, commander of
the 667th ACSWatHofn, received a phone call from
the Icelandic Search and Rescue Association. A
fishing boat, with 15 crewmen on board, had run
aground during the night about one mile from the
radar site. A rescue team was quickly assembled
and led by MSGT. B. J. Smith and MSGT. George
Campbell. The fishermen were pulled about 500
feet from the ship to shore and only two minor
injuries occurred during the rescue. .An Icelandic
doctor, Stefan Finnsson, aided by medical person-
nel from the radar site, gave first aid treatment
at the scene.

A desire for more skill training is the primary
reason for re-enlistment among first-termers.
They also re-enlist for job security, formal ed-
ucation, advancement opportunities and the chance
to apply their knowledge and skills. Among sec-
ond-term and career enlisted people, qualifying
for a reasonable retirement is the primary reason
for shipping over.
The Navy position is that retention and sep-
aration surveys are the most effective source of
feedback from the fleet. The Navy would like to
receive a higher return percentage on question-
nairs administered in the future.
