LCDR George Marshall Talton III, VP-40's training officer, comes
back to Iceland after an eight year absence. LCDR Talton has spent
two prior deployments with VP squadrons here in Keflavik. The first
time was from March to August 1973. He then returned again from
September 1975 to February 1976. As the mission commander of Combat
Air-Crew Eight, he has been affectionately labeled "The Dali Llama,"
their fearless leader. LCDR Talton is shown here speaking with
Japanese Naval officers during VP-40's last deployment to Misawa,
Japan, from June to December 1983.
"No, you're wrong the flag is not just a symbol"
By TSgt. Mike Roberts
Military Airlift Command, Scott AFB, Ill.
Recently, a young woman made national headlines
by refusing to stand for the national anthem and
the flag. She said, "The flag is just a symbol.
It's the people who make the country."

Capt. Hartman noted that some services are not
covered by this ruling. These are services like
mail-order photo finishing, magazine subscrip-
tions, serial deliveries, mail-order seeds and
plants, collect on delivery (COD) orders and cred-
it orders where the buyer's account is not charg-
ed prior to shipment of the merchandise.
It's her right not to stand for the flag, but
her reasoning that the flag is "just a symbol"
contradicts her other statement of "It's the people
who make the country." Does she know how many
people have died for that flag and the freedom
woven into its colors, including the right to sit?
The flag is more than a symbol, just like the
Statue of Liberty is more than a statue and the
Constitution is more than a piece of paper. They
may not breathe, but they are living pieces of
America. If they die, so do the hopes and dreams
of people throughout the free world. And if those
hopes and dreams die, so does the right to express
personal convictions.
People have died trying to raise the flag above
battlefields. They have rallied around her as a
source of hope and inspiration and have absorbed
strength to continue fighting oppression and tyr-
anny.
No, the flag isn't "just a symbol." She's
alive with two centuries of the hopes and dreams
of people in search of a better life. She's alive
with the blood of two centuries of loving pro-
tection running through her threads. She's alive
with compassion ... even for those who don't re-
spect her or care about her.
