Valentine’s Day
By J03 Elizabeth E. Rathbone
Bows and arrows , love songs , Cu- '
pids, flaring red hearts, flowery mes-
sages , satin ribbons, candy boxes and lac-'
ey edged flowers in elaborate vases and on and on. These are all
'varying symbols of a special day in February. The date is the 14th
and it’s celebrated every year. It's Saint Valentine's Day.
Everyone has heard of the Patron Saint of Love, the Feast of Luper-
calia and St. Valentine, a priest in Rome who, in 269 A.D., had been
beaten until he was dead by order of Rome's Emperor Claudius. It is said
that St. Valentine died on the 14th of February.
But did you know about "Loveland" Colorado? The land-fall post-
al business began in 1947 when anjrjjSr individual sent the post office
some valentines to be remailed. postmaster stamped them with an
jappropriate red seal, "Loveland, and dropped them back in the mail.
The 14th of February is thei^^^^busiest day every year.
As you may have noticed through the years, there are many frills, rib-
bons and laces associated with this day. These have so been associat-
ed with romance since the days of knighthood, when the knight in his
shiny armor rode into battle with the scarf or ribbon given to him
by his lady fair. The word lace come to us from a Latin word
that means to "snare" or "noose." How appropriate for this
day when one "catches" a Valentine!
Cupid, one of the gods of mythology, means "desire"
kin Latin. Usually it's represented as a chubby and nak-
^ed winged boy or youth, and who is seen with a
^mischievous smile. He is notoriously known
for his bow and quiver of arrows with
which he transfixes the hearts of
maidens and youths.
