Joint Icelandic/NATO Base bowlers
enjoy new Brunswick lanes
Four bowlers from the NATO Base exchanged tech-
niques with Icelandic bowlers February 1.
It was the grand opening of Boling, Iceland's
first bowling alley since a four lane alley was
left over from a British camp 30 years ago.
Boling has 12 Brunswick lanes sold to them by the
British, which had once been owned by the NATO
Base in 1977.
Members of the championship Icelandic team from
30 years ago were the first to use the 12 lane
alley among than were Assistant Education Minister,
Omega Jona Thordardottir; the Mayor of Reykjavik,
David Oddesson and the NATO Base representatives.
Those representing the NATO Base were Lt. Debra
Straub, CW04 Jim Servis and ET1 Bill Glover who
were from the Naval Communications Station and
OTC Mark Hettrich from Naval Facility.
Boling is located on Oskjujild, in Reykjavik,
on the bottom floor of a new five-story building.
The bui1 ding , when fini shed, will be equipped with
physical fitness facilities and a restaurant
overlooking the city.
The Icelanders treated the four NATO represen-
tatives to a dinner in one of their finest res-
taurants, Hotel Saga.
It's been said, "Lightening doesn't strike
twice in the same place," but try to convince the
basketball players of the 960th AWACS of this
adage and you'll rightfully get an argument.
Having just recently won the 1985 intramural
basketball championship, the 960th also captured
the AFI (Air Forces Iceland) Basketball Tourna-
ment, coordinated by A.F. Lt. Scott Trotter, of
the Chief of Services' Division. Also on hand
to view and present the 1st place trophy at the
conclusion of the event was Colonel Dallas Hanna,
Commander, Air Forces Iceland.
