The Fleet Reserve Association
The Fleet Reserve Association
is a national organization for
active, retired and reserve mem-
bers of the Navy, Marine Corps
arid Coast Guard. The FRA has
over 166,000 members and over
250 branches world-wide. The
Northern Lights branch, no. 255,
was founded here in Iceland
March 27, 1962. Their first
meeting was conducted in the In-
ternational Airport. Today they
have their own "home," bldg.
2306, with 266 members. They
are still growing.
The FRA has, for over 50
years, been dedicated to fight-
ing for benefits of all sea ser-
vice personnel. Their lobbyist
in congress , shipmate Bob Boland,
has been instrumental in the
approval of many of their pre-
sent benefits, such as DLA, in-
creased PCS travel pay, COLA and
most recently dependent dental
care. There are many others
that are directly attributal to
the effects of the 6RA.
Let us not forget the ladies
auxiliary, the LAFRA. The Nor-
thern Lights unit, no. 255, was
founded November 22, 1968. Cur-
rently their membership is only
15, but they have begun a mem-
bership drive, expecting to grow
fast, and will once again become
a mainstay in community affairs.
If you are interested in be-
coming a member of the largest
and oldest organizations on base
that exist only to serve you,
stop by the FRA home. It is open
Wednesday through Sunday night
and Saturday a'nd Sunday after-
noon.
New air terminal
construction progressing
(Editor's note: The following
information was taken from a
news article in Morgunbladid, 27
Jurte 1985, page "30.)
The new air terminal at Kef-
lavik is proceeding well and the
shell of the building has al-
most been completed. The ob-
jective is to complete the roof
of the building and the grid for
the glass section of the roof
and thus to close the building
completely, by the end of Sept-
ember.
According to Runar Hauksson
with the State Architect's Of-
fice the building is to be
taken into use in the spring of
1987 if everything goes well.
Air Force selects new staff sergeants
RANDOLPH AFB, Texas (AFNS) — Air Force has
selected 14,420 Staff Sergeants for promotion to
Technical sergeant during the next cycle.
A total of 75,646 eligibles were considered
for a selection rate of 19.6 percent, Manpower
and Personnel Center officials here said.
Last year the Air Force selected 13,519 of
74,617 eligibles for a rate of 18.12 percent.
Officials attributed this year's increase to
slightly higher grade structure and end strength.
The average score for selectees was 322.41,
including 37.4 points for time in grade, 24.31
points for time in service, three points for de-
corations, 133.53 points for airman performance
reports, 66 points on the promotion fitness exam
and 63.39 points on the speciality knowledge
test.
Average age of those selected for promotion
was 30.87. (AFNS)
Changes to Air Force weight program
Some recent changes to Air
Force Regulation 35-11r ffect
the weight management program.
Appearance now plays a greater
role. The revisions to Air
Force Regulation 35-11 don't
change maximum allowable weights
but they do gove the commander
more flexibility in administer-
ing the program. Commanders can
lower maximum weight standards
if people don't present a pro-
fessional military appearance at
their current weight. The re-
visions still allow commanders
to adjust maximum weights for
people who exceed the standards
but look good in uniform.
In both cases a body fat
measurement, a nomogram, will be
used based on revised standards.
Under previous limits, men were
allowed 24 percent body fat and
women were allowed 32 percent.
The new limits are 20 percent
body fat for men 29 and younger
and 24 percent for men over 29.
For women, the standard is 26
percent body fat for those 29
and under and 30 percent for
those over 29.
People who are at or below
desired levels will continue to
be weighed annually, while those
who exceed the desired level
will be weighed semiannually, in
January and July. The amount of
weight a person in the program
must lose each month also has
changed from six pounds every
60 days to five pounds per month
for men and three pounds per
month for women. People on the
program will eceive quarterly
diet counseling and be required
to participate in a minimum 90-
day exercise program.
Ethel Moody
gave more than 6,000 free
blood pressure tests last year.
