RESCUE from 1 lie affairs officer, Capt. Scott Sines, this crew only had "a couple of hours sleep" that night before receiving the second call to rescue an Icelandic fisherman. This third rescue was the most difficult and dramatic. It re- quired the rescuers to hover, in the dark with no horizon as a re- ference point, above a pitching trawler. kidney stones The call for help through the OPCON desk came at 45 minutes past midnight. It requested the airlift of a seaman with internal injuries from a fishing boat 80 miles west of Iceland. Both a "Jolly Green Giant" helicopter and an HC-130 "Hercules" were launched immediately. The boat was located and two PJs were put on deck. As they prepared the patient for pick-up the cable from the helo became entangled and snapped. The crew had to return to Keflavik to change helicopters leaving the patient and the PJs temporarily on the trawler. Shortly, they returned and hoisted the patient on board. However, the hoist malfunctioned and, although the patient was on board the PJs could not be pick- ed up and had to return to Rey- kjavik on the fishing boat.
