Navy Relief Society - financial assistance and more The late night phone call an- nouncing the serious illness or death of an immediate family mem- ber, jolting as that is, may very well occur at a time when the bank balance and savings account provide nowhere near enough money for immediate travel needs and other related expenses. Fortunately, for Sailors and Marines the solution to this type of problem is relatively easy--turn to Navy Relief for help. One of the primary funct- ions of the Navy Relief Society is to provide financial assista- nce in the form of interest free loans, outright grants or a com- bination of both to Naval ser- vicemembers who may be facing this very problem. Navy Relief financial assist- ance is available to the Sailor, Marine or spouse in situations where there is death or serious illness of mother, father, sis- ter, brother, spouse, children or only living relative. Kef- lavik Auxiliary volunteers are prepared to assist Marines and Sailors or their spouses with round trip transportation to the emergency leave address. Inst- ances of requests for transpor- tation of entire military fami- lies will be discussed on an in- dividual basis. During the interview, the Keflavik Auxiliary volunteer will assist with decisions re- garding: who needs to go, who will care for children, the meth- od of travel, and related expen- ses such as lodging and food. Reservations on commercial carriers will be confirmed. Fu- nds will be provided based on in- dividual needs. In time sensitive cases, the decision as to whether assistan- ce will be repaid will be made after the emergency is passed. The Navy Relief volunteer is ded- icated to provide fast, effic- ient, compassionate service. Navy Relief will also assist with funding emergency travel in the case of death or critical illness of grandparents. In such instances assistance is limited to funding travel for the member or spouse whose grandparent is ill or has died. In all such cases, it is rec- ommended that the American Red Cross verify the funeral arrange- ments or the nature of the ill- ness, prognosis, advisability of servicemember's or spouse's pre- sence, so that the Command can make a timely decision about emergency-leave, and Navy Relief can respond promptly with what- ever assistance may be needed. When an emergency strikes, call the Keflavik Auxiliary at 4602 during working hours or 2100 after working hours. Emer- gency leave requests will be giv- en priority over scheduled appoi- ntments, but a "heads up" really enables Navy Relief to provide better service to all applicants. VP-10 promotion Lt. j.g.
