"It was no contest!"
That's how Chief Warrant Of-
ficer Phil Ryan, coach of the
1985 Northern European Regional
Softball Tournament's Champion-
ship team from the NATO Base de-
scribed the team's victory. The
team had recently returned to
Iceland from Mildenhall, England,
where the tournament was held.
"We didn't go there (to Eng-
land) to have fun, we went to
play softball and that's what we
did," beamed Ryan, during an in-
terview with The White Falcon.
"Our guys played with a lot of
ispirit and that made the differ-
ence. We weren't looking for
the fence, we just played darned
tood ball and it paid off."
Coach Ryan stated that during
one of the final games his team
went up against a team which had
placed second in the Navy's In-
terservice competition "and we
beat them solidly."
"I think, and so do most of
the players, that the support of
everyone here on the NATO Base
gave us that winning determin-
ation, without it things might
have gone the other way," ex-
plained Coach 'Rj'an. "Our goal
was to bring home the 1st place
trophy and keep ogr base's win-
ning streak going--we want to
win it three years in a row."
This is the second year that
the NATO Base has taken the Nor-
thern Regional championship but
the first year that they have
gone undefeated throughout the
entire tournament.
"Two of our players, Joe Kel-
ley and Randy Raiden, were sel-
ected to play on the tournaments
All-Star Team. This showed we
had some real talent," he said.
