NAS Commanding Officers Capt. G.T. Lloyd (L) presents a cash
award to DPI D’Amore.
Data Processor First Class
(DPI) Lee M. D' Amore of the U.S.
Naval Air Station Comptroller
Department received a cash
award worth over $1,400 for his
cost saving suggestion.
Petty Officer D'Amore's
suggestion converted from an
existing keypunch system to a
Data Entry Generator System or
DEGS. DEGS is a computer
program that allows jsers at
locations around the base to
transmit data directly to the
comptroler department and be
stored, ready for immediate use
when the comptrollers need it.
Basically, the DEG System
drastically reduces the number of
keypunch cards required for
computer input operations plus the associated
manpower to place the data on keypunch cards.
Additionally, it saves computer run time and
increases the operational readiness of the entire
system.
"We had three people in data entry (key punch
operators) who never seemed to be caught up. I've
seen sysytems of this type elsewhere and I knew
that this is a more efficeint system of data entry, ’
said DPI D'Amore.
It saves on both manpower and material. First
year savings are over $15,000 dollars.
The suggestion took nearly three months of after
hours work to complete. DPI D'Amore modified
application programs at the various sites slightly to
make them compatible with the Comptroller
Department requirements. Then he installed
terminals and ran cabling between the sites,
accounting, payroll and aviation (3-M), to the
Comptroller Department's main computer. This
clearly demonstrated his desire to work outside his
particular area of responsibility and strive for
improvements in the way things work.
Normal implementation of this type of
programming is reserved for the Navy Regional Data
Automation Center (NARDAC) or Fleet Material
Support Office (FMSO).
Naval Air Station Keflavik is the first Commander
Naval Air Atlantic site to install this type of
upgraded system.
What are the plans for his cash reward, 'My wife
will be putting it down for a wall unit, after we get
back to the states. We leave here in a couple of
months,” smiled D'Amore
